Feature by Rebecca Hale, published in TES 30/04/2024   A survey by the UCL Centre for Holocaust Education aims to uncover how students are learning about the subject and provide guidance to teachers on tackling misinformation and misunderstandings. From Ramadan to Passover – A journey of renewal and hope

A seasonal message from Ruth-Anne Lenga, Associate Professor in the UCL Centre for Holocaust Education A week ago, my IOE laptop was on its last legs. It couldn’t maintain battery charge; the internal mouse had given up and the whole piece of kit looked battle worn. I ambled my way to the lower level of the IOE to find the small and inconspicuous IT office where hopefully I’d find some kind soul who could triage the situation. Either it could be resuscitated, or it was game over for the computer together with my unsaved data. Things were not looking good, but when I knocked the door, I was del ..read more

In challenging and difficult times it can be easy to despair. With so much global conflict and crisis, division and hate across our political or media discourse, online and within many of our communities, it can be hard to find reasons to be optimistic. Approaching Holocaust Memorial Day within such troubling times can be difficult, challenging, and uncomfortable – perhaps the day always should be, but never has it been more important for our schools leaders to create the space to mark the day. HMD is an opportunity to learn, commemorate and reflect, it is a chance to bring people together, in ..read more

Holocaust Memorial Day: why historical knowledge and conceptual understanding are key to engaging with the fragility of freedom
Centre for Holocaust Education

by Rebecca Hale. Every year, on the 27th January, people come together to mark Holocaust Memorial Day (HMD). They participate in events to remember the millions of people murdered during the Holocaust and in other genocides. For many schools, HMD provides an important opportunity to teach students about the Holocaust, supporting them to reflect on its contemporary significance, and providing a space for young people to honour the memory of the victims. Indeed, in the UCL Centre for Holocaust Education’s most recent national study, 74.5% of teachers reported that their school marked HMD as part ..read more

by Ruth-Anne Lenga, Associate Professor, UCL Centre for Holocaust Education. Back in June 2023, this country lost one of its greatest humanitarians and achievers, Holocaust survivor and leader of the British Holocaust survivor community, Sir Ben Helfgott. After spending much of his childhood evading death at the hands of the Nazis, in the ghetto of his Polish hometown of Piotrkow, and the concentration camps of Buchenwald and Theresienstadt, he ended his long life peacefully, at the age of 93, after spending his post- war years honouring the memory of those who were not so lucky. He died in th ..read more
