In the year 1943, 4 Jewish children from Amsterdam were herded onto trains and sent off to an unknown destination. Each of these children carried something with them: a small aluminum name tag given to them by their parents, stating their names, birthdates, and place of origin. The parents understood that their children might be separated from them in the chaos, and they wanted to make sure they would be reunited if that happened. Unfortunately, what happened next was much worse than any of these parents imagined. These families were all exterminated in the gas chambers at the infamous Sobibor ..read more

When the Gestapo boarded the train carrying Marta and Alexandr Knapp during their attempted escape from Prague in June 1942, they had to make a fast decision. They knew that the Nazis would find them. They knew that they would probably never return from wherever they would be taken. And they knew that their baby daughter, Alice, had no chance of surviving if she stayed with them. Viktor Okmian, a Holocaust survivor, last saw his father Boris, mother Dobra, brother Ralph, and two grandparents in 1941. That was when his entire family was murdered by the Nazis in a Rumbula Forest massacre in Riga, Latvia. Some 25,000 Jews were killed during that event. Thanks to MyHeritage, 77 years after being separated from his parents, Viktor was finally able to see photos he had never seen of his family. Viktor, then 13, was at a summer camp.
