One of the technologies that’s supposed to sustain Tesla’s lead for the next generation of electric vehicles is the novel new production method of “gigacasting.” It’s expected to make producing car bodies faster, simpler, and above all, cheaper. But that doesn’t seem to be panning out perfectly, as Tesla is reportedly abandoning its plans to cast cars’ entire underbodies.
“Gigacasting” has become a buzzword for a form of large-scale, high-pressure casting that has garnered interest even from legacy automakers. Toyota is one of the technology’s biggest proponents, despite early problems ..read more

Tesla is in a slide as its sales fall, plans for its highly anticipated $25,000 entry-level EV have reportedly been scrapped, and its autonomy program fizzles. Now things look set to worsen further, as CEO Elon Musk has reportedly dismissed not only Tesla’s charging network team, but also gutted its new vehicle development program. They’re only some of the many mounting factors that look to threaten the very foundations of Tesla’s business.
Tesla’s newest round of layoffs were reportedly initiated by Musk in an email to senior managers, as reported by The Information. Musk is reportedly ..read more

Top Gear
The Tesla Cybertruck wasn’t much of an off-roader at launch, with even the Ford F-150 Lightning upstaging the supposedly revolutionary pickup. Now though, Tesla has done a No Man’s Sky and added some features that should’ve been in at launch: Those crucial off-road modes. Now, the Cybertruck can finally prove what it’s made of, and that it’s pretty hand off-road. With a couple caveats, of course.
The Cybertruck’s off-road functionality has been added in a patch detailed in a post on X, which appears to be how Tesla addresses the public nowadays. The update, “installing on wave 1 vehi ..read more

Tesla’s entry-level EV is getting another update, and this time it’s all about the performance of the lowly Model 3. While the sedan still hasn’t received the Plaid treatment, the newly released “Highland” variant has now produced the new Tesla Model 3 Performance, which is faster and better equipped for carving backroads thanks to a few powertrain and suspension improvements.
Tesla calls the 2024 Model 3 Performance the “most powerful Model 3 ever,” and preliminary testing from Top Gear seems to back that up. The trim is based on the Model 3 Long Range, meaning it adopts the same dual ..read more

Tesla.
A few weeks ago, Tesla’s stock dipped a bit after Reuters reported that the entry-level, $25,000 Model 2 was being dropped in favor of autonomous robotaxis. CEO Elon Musk then fired back in a post on the social media platform he owns, claiming Reuters was lying, but failed to provide any further explanation. Then, earlier this week, Tesla reported that its first-quarter net profit plummeted to its lowest point in six years. In response to all this, Musk used an earnings call to once again push the idea of robotaxis—and, weirdly, humanoid robots—while tossing in a few throwaway lines ab ..read more

The Tesla Cybertruck has officially been recalled for its flimsy accelerator pedal that could fall apart and become stuck in a depressed position, launching the electric pickup at full speed. Documents from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration show that the problematic pedal is estimated to be present in all 3,878 Cybertrucks manufactured and delivered from last November up until April 4, about which time Tesla reportedly recognized the defect and paused sales.
NHTSA describes the issue in detail, saying the accelerator pedal’s aluminum cover, or pad, m ..read more

Just a few days ago, Tesla issued a stop-sale for the Cybertruck due to an undisclosed problem with its accelerator pedal. That problem may have been illustrated by an owner, who showed on social media how the pedal could get stuck. Now, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is getting involved as an unintended acceleration problem looks increasingly likely.
News of the Cybertruck’s stop-sale due to accelerator pedal problems broke over the weekend, along with a video outlining its potential cause. Posted to TikTok, the video ..read more

Many soon-to-be Cybertruck customers are facing delivery delays due to unintended acceleration issues that existing owners are facing. While some customers with deliveries slated didn’t get any explanations—just emails from Tesla informing them of a delay—others have been told that it’s due to a faulty accelerator pedal that can cause sudden full-throttle acceleration.
TikTok user el.chapito1985 posted a video explaining what happened to their Cybertruck, clarifying the delays that other owners have posted about on Cybertruck forums and Reddit. The issue stems not f ..read more

Bowlus
We’ve known since the Rivian R1T launched that towing isn’t what electric pickup trucks are best at. The Tesla Cybertruck is no different, as a recent test has shown it gets worse range towing than a Model X dragging the exact same trailer.
This weakness was discovered by luxury trailer manufacturer Bowlus. The company’s CEO, Geneva Long, said in a LinkedIn post that the test involved Bowlus’s Volterra trailer, a low-drag camper similar to an Airstream in shape. With a 17 kilowatt-hour LFP battery, solar panels, and the ability to give an emergency charge to an EV, it’s exactly the kin ..read more

Tesla Model 3 Highland. Tesla.
I guess Elon Musk wanted to get ahead of being corrected by X‘s community notes, so he decided to correct himself. On Friday, Reuters reported that Tesla is axing the entry-level Model 2 in favor of self-driving robotaxis, to which Musk claimed “Reuters is lying (again),” without any specifics. However, only about five hours later, Musk then posted “Tesla Robotaxi unveil on 8/8.” Community notes crisis averted.
In Musk’s defense, his denial of Reuters‘ story could have been referring to the claim that the entry-level Model 2 was being scrapped and that the Robot ..read more
