Deedee kindly waited until a convenient 5:00 AM to start whelping her puppies, allowing catnapping for both of us through the night! She just did not look that big and even with my hand-held Doppler, I could only find 5-6 heartbeats (all of which sounded strong and healthy). Chelsea and Blitz's pups have started to open their eyes (gradually)at around 18 days. They can still only see a few feet in front of them. As with most new puppies, they often startle slightly or at least seem surprised at large moving shapes (even mama) looming over their box and are curious about seeing each other for the first time. I have observed that within a few hours of puppies opening their eyes, they suddenly will raise themselves up and start tottering around on their legs, rather than dragging their little bodies around on their bellies like fat little seal pups.  We have three beautiful mamas nursing older litters here now and as both Sydney and Brinkley are sweet girls and very compliant, I wondered if they would nurse the three tiniest pups until Kiki’s milk came in. This is a risky exercise and I certainly wouldn’t try it would just any female dog…  Sydney and Brinkley were very interested AND concerned by the hungry squeaks coming from the room with Kiki’s new litter of 10 puppies. Kiki and Bailey are proud to announce the birth of their 10 new puppies. The midterm ultrasound did show a full house, but not this many! Ten pups is remarkable in-and-of -itself, but even more remarkable is that there are 9 girls in this litter! These pups even at just 4 weeks old are showing the sign of inheriting the special human-focused and intuitive natures that come down the line from past generations of the "Greats" of the breed, including Rutlands Baby Joey and TP Cool Dude. At 4 1/2 weeks of age, the little ones have turned from guinea pig-like tumbling furballs into real PUPPIES!
