When Jules approached me about gifting a photoshoot for his roomate/best friend Gordon, I was so excited! It was such an honour to capture these two along with doggo Wilbur on a beautiful morning. We planned it out and settled on a gorgeous location right when the daffodils were blooming at Meegan park. I really love best friend shoots, roommate shoots, etc. A photo session such a fun way to celebrate and build memories together ..read more

Josiah: Softness and Light
Hi Bertie Blog

I love movement shots!! During our session I try to make a little bit of time for free flowing movement, no pressure, no posing. A lot of the photos end up being a little silly and a lot of fun. It's such a great exercise in loosening up and getting comfy. I love the ones of Josiah dancing by the water.  It feels good to move our bodies. Flail those arms, jump, stretch, contort. A photo session can be a great opportunity to explore movement in ways that we aren't use to... A release of expectations. Being part of a creative project can free us from societal expectations of how our b ..read more

Matilde: Trust the Process
Hi Bertie Blog
by Emilie Berthiaume

I had this lovely shoot with Matilde at Phyllis Park, on a cloudy January morning. Since it was supposed to rain, I checked in with her over text about how she was feeling, and her response was "Trusting the process :)". Matilde brought that energy to the shoot and we were able to not only stay dry but also capture some shots that truly captured her essence in that moment. On the drive home after the shoot it finally started to rain.   ..read more

Islay & Ciáran: Two Beautiful Clowns
Hi Bertie Blog
by Emilie Berthiaume

Islay & Ciáran make up the improve duo: Cowboy. These two are making waves in the local art scene and it was an honour to photograph them for their show Hair Funeral. The concept for this shoot was two silly old cowboy-clowns in a liminal space, contemplating life and its significant moments. We had a lot of fun shooting these photos and the day came with it's own challenges... the wind, rapidly changing lighting conditions, a rising tide. Islay and Ciáran were absolute troopers and we managed to get some incredible shots through it all ..read more

Des visages means “Faces” in French and is Bertie’s first collection of paintings. This style is heavily influenced by a painting in Bertie’s life growing up: a face made up of bold reds, greens, and yellows. This piece followed Bertie’s family as they moved from Quebec to British Columbia. To learn more about this influence, make sure to check out the show! It is being shown at the Victoria Tool Library from November 2 to December 12 2023. Find the entrance at 750 Fairfield Rd. Greenhouse Artist Residency at Sweetpea Gallery - September 2023
Hi Bertie Blog
by Emilie Berthiaume

My last two collections have involved dreamy and highly personal portraiture, so this time I’ve decided to do things differently✨ Sometimes creativity is stifled when we are focused on the outcome. So for this residency, I have kept repeating to myself: “nothing serious, nothing serious, nothing serious”. I am focusing on playing. I am focusing on the process. It’s been quite the mental exercise to let go of outcome. I took it really literally and ended up spending the month playing with toys! ? For the month of September 2023 I have was spending my time in Sweetpea Gallery's Greenhouse ..read more
