Kirsten receives the Blue Water Medal from the Cruising Club of America at the New York Yacht Club in New York City. ROUND POND – Last spring at this time there were lots of people following the progress of South African Kirsten Neuschafer, who was sailing MINNEHAHA in the Golden Globe Race, which is a singlehanded, non-stop race around the world. This race was first run in 1968 when eight competitors headed out from England with just one finishing, Sir Robin Knox-Johnston. When the race was restarted several years ago the rules said that you needed a production boat no newer than 1988 and ..read more

With the Maine Fishermen’s Forum in the rear-view mirror, there are now less than three months before the first lobster boat race. I usually have everything in order and ready to go within a couple of weeks of the last race. This year I still have the results to put into the computer. Not a big deal, takes a couple of days to put together, and I should see if I could add the results of the races before 1999. At the Annual Banquet there were no changes to the rules. There was a class change. Class N was divided into two races. It now reads: Class N (A), 40 feet and over, 751 to 1000 hp. Class N ..read more

With this being said, I thought real hard about where to go with this, and with boat race season coming up, and the boats in the yard getting ready to go back overboard for another season, it only stands to reason that w ..read more

Jeremy Beal lifting a gasoline race engine into his boat. JONESPORT – There has been a lot of changes in the lobster fishery over the years, but none compare to the changes in how the boats are powered. Back in the 1800s the fishermen rowed their boats and then they switched over to sail as the went further out. With the advent of the internal combustion engine, it was not long before fishermen started having them fitted into their boats. First, it was one-lungers running on naphtha or gasoline. These engines evolved over the years gaining more and more horsepower and this allowed the fis ..read more

By Sheila Dassatt         It won’t be long and it will be baseball season!  This is a sign that spring is on it’s way with the hope that things will take on a normalcy for the time of the year.  There are die hard Red Sox fans and also die hard New York Yankee fans, and the two types of fans just don’t mix. Okay, what does spring baseball have to do with the fishing industry?  Well, I had to think long and hard to make this work.  It’s kinda like throwing the dice or spinning the wheel to see where it’s going to land. The wheel has various sub ..read more
