Most people are not aware that many companies that sell potting soil in Singapore actually offer soil-less mixes (yup, most soil-less mix are "sterile", void of any form of fungi and bacteria (that means also no beneficial bacteria and fungi which are needed crucially in a healthy soil)
Even soil based potting mix that are sold in Singapore can have very low count of beneficial fungi and other micro-organism either to manufacture or storage conditions that are less than ideal.

Over the years, growers often asked us whether tap water was bad for gardening and farming.
In short, long term use of tap water is not good for the soil.
The reason is because of chlorine that is present in tap water (Yes, Singapore tap water contains chlorine).
While chlorine is added to tap water to ensure that to make it safer for human to drink, long term use of chlorinated water will kill and reduce the microbes count in soil in the long term.

One of the things we spent alot of time on is to identify suitable varieties of agricultural crops suitable for Singapore weather.
Commercially, many farms around the world do not practise organic farming principles. That is one of the reasons why you often do not see much muskmelons being displayed on our local supermarkets under the "organic" produce section.
