Helmets: are three decades of division over?
Treadlie Magazine
by Georgia Thomas

Helmet legislation came to Australia in 1992 and we’ve been arguing about it ever since. Why would that change?  There are a couple of reasons – one is interesting, but not exciting. The other is both interesting and exciting. The first reason why we might be about to stop arguing about helmets is that we are all a lot more “au courant”* with arguments about epidemiology versus personal liberty.  During COVID, we have been compliant in the main with all the restrictions that our expert advisors have come up with.  If everyone is required to wear masks to go to the shop, it doesn ..read more

Photos courtesy Mt Hotham Resort Management Recent warm weather has seen many cyclists undertaking intensive training to ride one of the most challenging climbs in Australia – the Great Alpine Road from Harrietville to Mt Hotham. Colloquially known as the GAR, this is Australia’s highest sealed road, accessible year-round but most commonly ridden in summer, thanks to the snow that often blankets the road in winter. With an average gradient of 4.2% and a maximum gradient of about 18%, this 30km ride is not for the faint of heart or the unprepared. It’s not hard to see the appeal – starting the ..read more

So many women have had a bad first experience on a mountain bike. We’ve all been there, riding their partners ‘old’ bike and following them down a technical trail, scaring the pants off them, leaving them never wanting to get back on the bike again!&nbs ..read more

New research finds access to bicycles improves school attendance for girls in Zambia’s rural communities
Treadlie Magazine
by Georgia Thomas
1y ago
World Bicycle Relief has released the follow-up results for their Wheels of Change study, which finds that giving girls in rural Zambia access to a bicycle reduces school absenteeism by 29% and school drop-out rates by 19%. While significant efforts have been made by the Zambian Government to improve access to basic education and achieve gender parity, school attendance and completion rates remain much lower for girls in comparison to their male peers. This is often due to the tyranny of distance. Parents have legitimate safety concerns about their daughters travelling long distances without a ..read more
