Family style cooking Last week, a lovely American family – ‘mom’, ‘pop’ and their 12-year old son booked in for one of my private unique Scottish cooking classes and it was a great success. I have run the cooking class with adults, but it worked really well with an enthusiast for slicing leeks, chopping potatoes, flaking fish and rolling up their sleeves and using their hands (clean) to mix sugar and butter together for shortbread. Elegant sitting room for eating and relaxing before and after Scottish cooking classOats Rule in Scottish Cooking  The private cooking classes take place in my ..read more

Nell Nelson loves to eat – it’s a journey – and there is always a story behind the plate. Come and explore with Nell. This week its Dulse Seafood Restaurant in Edinburgh’s West End. https://www.youtube.com/shorts/Tl8pRgEIPBM First impression: Very light and airy – the Dulse Seafood Restaurant’s main dining room is upstairs on Queensferry Street  – the space used to be an opticians – they’ve kept the old sign inside. Cheers – Nell and pal clinking glassesDulse Seafood Menu:   The clue is in the name – dulse is a red seaweed so Scottish seafood features a lot. The menu is made of small ..read more

Nell Nelson visits one of Scotland’s newest Michelin Star restaurants – the Glenturret Lalique Restaurant in Perthshire Seeing Michelin Stars at the Glenturret Lalique Restaurant This exquisite lobster-flavoured and shaped biscuit or should I say ‘Bisque-it’ as it appears on the menu is just one tiny part of one of the 14 dishes on the tasting menu at The Glenturret Lalique Restaurant.  The set menu is priced at £150 per person – you might say, and many have said, including myself, “how good can it be?” And I have to say I was blown away by the sheer inventiveness, range of flavours as w ..read more

Nothing says Christmas is in the air for me, more  than the sound of Mariah Carey singing  ‘ all I want for Christmas’ and the smell and taste of mulled wine or hot mead. Wonderful hot mead, mulled wine for sale at Winchester Christmas MarketHow We Started Selling Mulled Wine A friend and I love mulled wine so much that we actually run a stall at Winchester Christmas Market over November and December selling mulled wine, hot mead, buttered cranberry punch and mulled local cider. Leith Theatre; a stunning 1930’s buildingAfternoon Tea for Four on day out in Leith A friend was given an afternoon Prosecco tea for four at the secret ladies’ bar of Leith Theatre as her Christmas present.  It was part of the Leith Theatre’s fund raising campaign and her husband obviously thought some good should come from his wife’s love of quaffing fizz and cake with her chums. But Covid meant the tea was delayed for two years. So last week, we eventually managed to head for the secret ladies’ bar in the  Leith Theatre on Ferry Road. We were instructed to dress warmly and we would ..read more
