20 Years Later

In 2003 I ran a half-marathon. And now 20 years later I ran it again. But I made some much needed changes. 11 months ago, I embarked on a running journey that has transformed both my physical and mental capabilities. Starting with mere 1-minute runs followed by 1-minute walks, I gradually progressed and after a few months, began contemplating a significant goal. This led me to register for the Calgary half-marathon, which took place this past Sunday, May 28th. With a target of completing the race in under three hours while ensuring an injury free finish, I am really grateful to say that I ach ..read more

Welcome to the second part of my blog series, where we dive deeper into the remarkable world of sleep and explore its impact on our overall well-being and success. As business owners, sleep should be something that we use to our advantage, and yet I believe it is often overlooked and under-appreciated.  Today, we unravel the hidden secrets of sleep and why prioritizing rest is essential for unleashing our full potential. In my previous blog, I talked about what happens when we sleep. It’s important to recognize that sleeping is far from a passive process. In fact, it is an incredibly act ..read more

Lets Talk about Sleep
Donita Fowler Blog

I have a check in with clients before we start a session, and as of late, I have added the question “how much sleep have you had in the last 7 days?” Most answers are that they have slept ok, but could use more. Which got me thinking, what happens when we don’t get enough sleep. Besides the insistent yawning throughout the day….there are a few cognitive challenges that come with not enough sleep. One of the first things to go when we don’t get enough sleep is the ability to focus our attention. These are called attentional blinks, and it’s where you lose your ability to pay attention for just ..read more

The Art of Patience
Donita Fowler Blog

Waiting for something is an art. And having the patience to wait for something is a very powerful thing.  When was the last time you waited for something?  Maybe it was a goal that didn’t work out, and you had to make adjustments. And it just didn’t happen in the time frame you wanted. And so you had to wait. And be patient.  Or did you throw your hands in the air, call it a day, and move on to the next thing?  No judgment here, that is how I used to be. If something didn’t work out very fast, I didn’t give it space to work out at all.  That is in part why my resume ..read more

What is Codependency

I recently finished a book called Codependent no more, by Melody Beattie. And, although I know what codependent is, I didn’t realize how it can show up in a variety of ways. It can intertwine itself deeply in our lives, and our relationships. As business owners, we need to equip ourselves with as many tools and resources as we can. This is my debrief of the book, and a different perspective on codependency. Codependency can have a range of negative effects on us, as individuals and on our relationships. And in business, it can really hold us back on what needs to be done, and how we show up f ..read more

I just didn’t want to do it

2023 hasn’t exactly started with a bang for me. I have felt a bit sluggish, and just not in my regular groove. Possibly languishing if I am channeling my inner Adam Grant. I actually think it’s just the ebb and flow of life, and for me it just happens to be  the start of a new year.  This week, I had an early morning gym session booked with my daughter. And (like usual) the 5:45 am alarm went off and I wanted to ignore it and go back to sleep. (A 5km treadmill run at 6am, um, not exactly a party). I even went to her room to see if she was awake, because if she wasn’t – I mean, we ca ..read more

What 400 days of consecutive meditation taught me
Donita Fowler Blog

What started out for me as a simple, sure I’ll give this a try has become one of my daily rituals that I never (and I rarely use the word never) miss. It doesn’t matter if I’m camping, on vacation, or went to bed late or fell asleep early … daily meditation is something I never miss. I use the insight timer app for guided meditations, and apparently to track my consecutive meditations. And then it happened, one night, I hit 400.  400 consecutive meditations, I’m not sure I’ve done much for my well-being 400 days in a row. I exercise 5 days a week, I try to eat healthy, I drink 1 – 2 of m ..read more

Negativity Has It’s Place
Donita Fowler Blog

Have you ever heard someone say that negative thinking won’t get you anywhere? Or maybe people have told you to just stay positive. Maybe you’ve been told to stop thinking negative thoughts and you’ll be better off. Negative thinking never helps anyone, and it won’t help you. Well, today I’m here to rock the boat and tell you that negative thinking can play a crucial role in shaping our perspectives, attitudes, and decision-making processes. In other words, negative thinking can be very helpful. I recently finished Gabor Matte’s book, When the Body Says No. In that book, Matte states that neg ..read more

My Journaling Habit
Donita Fowler Blog
by Donita Fowler

I’ve been working with my therapist for just over 18 months, and one of the tools that she suggested (with some resistance from me, of course) was journaling. I thought journaling was fluffy, not effective, and only used by people who weren’t serious about success. Definitely not me. I’d never journaled of course, and my wisdom about the non-benefits of came from that darn ego of mine, and to this day, I don’t know why I felt that way. And so this was one of those times in my therapist relationship where I was absolutely wrong. Thankfully, I was able to admit it. And since then I have filled ..read more
