I'm sorry if this is in the wrong place or has been answered before. I moved into a property late last year, there is a garden pond which was frozen over, so I did the pan method and left it alone. Now it is spring and I can see the water is quite murky, and it seems to be around 70% plant. I believe it has a liner but not sure if it has a plastic shell. There are newts in the pond (they don't look like the protected one), and I wanted to clean it out when they'd left so it was optimal for... Read more ..read more

Murky stagnant pond

we have what I expect you'd call a wildlife pond - dimensions 14 ft long x 8ft wide x 3ft deep (on average). There's no drainage or any way for the water to circulate/refresh It's not possible to connect electric pumps.aerators and so on to it After my Blagdon Liberty solar-powered pump failed, I suspect it's too big for solar pumps to make much of a difference What would your advice be on treatment to keep the water clean and clear? I put some blanketweed treatment in a week or so ago... Read more ..read more

Dichondria

Hello. I had Dichondria come up naturally around my ponds edge and it looked cute bewtween the rocks so I left it, hoping it would fill in the whole dirt area around the pond. Now, over a year later it has gotten a little taller and I'm not liking it as much. Plus, it's penitrated the pond foam and is now in the water and creeping into the surronding flower bed. Yesterday, racoons came and rearranged some of my rocks and as I was fixing them I realized how thick the roots are. I couldn't... Read more ..read more

Hi - we inherited a home-dug pond which had been drained and filled in with rubble (for safety I think) It took us a while to get around to clearing it out, re-lining it, filling and stiocking it, and since then it's always looked rather murky Full details in my post to follow ..read more

Building pondless feature so it has several inches of standing water

hello! we're converting our pond (with a cracked hard plastic liner) to go pondless, with a few adjustments to our waterfall. I prefer the look & style that has a few inches of standing water. And this is probably a dumb question, but how do you build it so that happens? It seems like most videos or tutorials I find have disappearing water. Any tips are appreciated. Thanks ..read more

Duck Ponds: Viable or hotbeds for bacteria and parasites?

So I've got a pretty thought-up plan for a self-filtering duck pond (~500 Gallons, it's more of little pool for them to enjoy) based on research and studying up on pond DIY... Except a pretty specific concern was raised to me: Bacteria and parasites. I'll post a more detailed plan later on, but the basic concept follows a sort-of Aquaponic system for the duck pond. Water is pushed through an airlift (Olomana Gardens really sold me on their effectiveness) into a solids filter, which... Read more ..read more

I have an opportunity to get a few baby koi from a pond owner in my area. Any thoughts on quarantining before they go into my pond would be appreciated. If you do recommend a quarantine period does it matter if in doors or outside? Thanks for your input ..read more
