I've got some free plants and found that there are ramshorn snail with them. I normally would used PP but this time, I would like to keep the snail and introduce them to my koi fry ( few months old ) aquarium. They are being quarantined for about a week now and probably be there for another week or so. Is that enough? Is there anything else I need to do? Thanks ..read more

Aerator size and oxygen reading

My pool cycled last month and I think all is good but the water temps are heating up at 77 degrees now. I want to be sure I have enough oxygen since I seen some in the middle of the pool sucking air? I really don't have any disk in the middle and the filter return is along the edge as well so maybe the oxygen lever is low in the middle? My 3/4 acre pond in back got up to 88 degrees last year, 8' deep end and average 4', 750,000 gal. I have no idea what the temp in the pool will be this summer but it will be in the shade at least? I lost my instructions to the oxygen meter and cant find a vide ..read more

Clarification needed on flow rates

Hi all, Well I've spent the winter gathering ideas and parts for a 12x20x3 pond. I'll likely need some assistance with fine tuning but for now I want to make sure I am understanding this chart that I've seen on here a lot. I will have (two) 4" bottom drains. Each drain will go to a 55 gallon drum settling tank before moving to a 'filter tote' (brushes/foam) and then to another container which will have the pump. (Biologic filtering will occur after the pump). If I am using a 2000gph pump, and using the below chart, does this mean that the settling tank could refill at approx 4356 gph? (esse ..read more

Changing food due to pricing

For years we used Saki Hikari multi season but now that the price has skyrocketed (like everything else) we are trying Kensen. The thing is they don’t seem to care for it. I started out mixing it with Hikari wheatgerm and then Kensen alone and they just pick at it. It is a slightly larger size. In the past when feeding with Hikari they would go crazy when fed. I not trying to pit one brand over another, I was just wondering what people experience when changing to a different brand ..read more

Another pool sand filter thread

I've been using a sand filter in my Koi Pond for many years now an as you might guess I've never been totally happy with it. I've tried pool sand, course river sand, lava rock, pea gravel and just about anything else I could think of. It has done a good job of making clear, clean water but it's a bear to keep up with. Right now, it's full of larger brown river rock and this has been probably the best it has done but I still need to back wash it every day especially this time of the year with all the pollen, and trash form the pine trees near the pond. I'm going to eliminate the pine tree probl ..read more
