Larger jerkbaits that are designed for pike and musky are made with a wire leader taken into the weighting. I still use solid stainless single strand wire in 225lb mostly. This is obviously overrated in terms of the targeted fish, but withstands the constantly casting without failure. It doesn't put the pike off at all.

I use the fox surefit leaders in 20lb for smaller lures, including the tapas shadow raps. Small snap links so they aren’t too heavy or interfere with the action. Not had a problem with these. Plenty of other wires available on the market if you choose to make your own. The American fishing wire gets a good write up, and it’s what I use in 75lb for big lures.

You can get away without using a swivel or a snap link. If your lure has a splitring, you can take some split ring pliers and attach the split ring to the trace via a small figure 8 loop in the wire. You can also attach the trace to mainline using a loop rather than a swivel. If the lure doesn't have a split ring, there are various trace wire materials that you can tie directly to the lure eye.
Note: the jerkbaits you will frequently see people referring to in the UK (and on this forum) for pike tend to be bigger lipless baits where the jerking of the rod or winding of the reel imparts all of ..read more

There are some lightweight wire traces, maybe that will work out. Don't use the thinner Fluoro carbon if you are targetting pike, go at least for 0.90mm. If those small/lightweight baits still fish correctly i don't know.

I use jerkbaits for largemouth bass a lot. The line is tied directly to the lure - swivels or snaps weigh the front of it down & it doesn't suspend correctly. I've never used them for pike but see that a lot of people do. How do you use them with a leader & still have them suspend after ripping the bait? Do larger jerkbaits handle this? The baits I use for bass are 4 inches at the most.
Appreciate any help I can get!
