Lure Mutations are easy to make and catch fish!

Making lures has been as important to me as much as fishing. 1. I can test theories regarding combinations of lure shape/ action/ size/ color 2. I can disprove much of the media crap that's not worth the air time or paper meant to sell lures but labeled as undeniable (kinda like political B.S.) Anyone can buy stuff to make almost any lure from bass jigs to crankbaits to finesse soft plastics. But what about all the bags of soft plastics you have stored in the basement (like me) for over 15... Read more ..read more

Whiskers on a fish? wacky rigged grub design of course

I had some spike-tail grubs hanging around and thought, 'what if I joined two together and wacky rigged them with the points sticking out'? As soon as I wacky-rigged it I knew fish would go beserk clobbering it after watching those twitching legs. Sho enough I wasn't disappointed and joined together other spike tail grubs ..read more

Soft plastic wire grip for jigs

I used to hate it when my soft plastic lure would slide down the hook after a short while. The lead barb doesn't hold the lure and also leaves a large hole in the lure when rigged. Enter the Soft Plastic Wire Grip. All you need is coated floral arrangement wire from any department store or on-line. For jigs over 1/32 oz I use 24 gauge; smaller for lighter jigs. 1. Line the wire up to the eye-tie... Read more ..read more

Who knew a grub body minus an action tail would catch so many fish!

Last year I was fishing a curly tail grub and the tail was bitten off by a pickerel. I cast it anyway and began catching panfish and bass. The Ned Rig is similar in concept but the lures used are longer. The grub body was only 1" rigged on a 1/32 oz ball head jig. I noticed it had a unique action: a darting quiver between drops & pauses. This small bass was the first of many. . Then I experimented melting grub bodies together using a candle for various shapes and textures... Read more ..read more

Recent long detailed discussion on color: was it predictive of which colors to use and when?

Biology aside, how does knowing what colors are seen or not seen by fish matter in the long run? Is there such a thing as color preference by fish when it comes to the strike? Does it matter if fish can't see certain colors for many of the reasons mentioned in the post about color? As for me, if I catch fish on certain lures in certain colors, I don't see any reason to change. Maybe it's because: I fish lakes that are less than 20' deep and usually in water less than 10'; daylight... Read more ..read more

All of the lakes have been filled with Trout in the Florence, Oregon / Dunes City area. Siltcoos, Takhenitch, Munsel, Carter, and Woahink. The best lures to use are from North Country Lures and Flies. 541-997-7080 ask for Dean. I can also provide information on where to go and what lure to use if your new to fishing. Sonic Bells, Yum Yum Egg Clusters and Torpedo Express are my favorites when fishing for trout. The colors and sizes can be customized on the spot as well ..read more

After losing 4 members of my tackle box to the depths of the Willamette last weekend (1 a new recruit fresh out of the package and on its first cast!), and 1 to the Tualatin yesterday, I decided a special extraction unit had to be my top priority. Neither Sportsman's nor Fisherman's carried one off the shelf so I had to put one together out of a ragtag bunch of misfit parts with everything to prove and nothing to lose. If you have a snag, if no one else can help, and if you can find the... Read more ..read more

Got to thinking about using a bobber for fishing for cats especially in river's. Someone on a catfish site mentioned using pop bottles. Well I got a hold of a 20oz bottle and one a bit smaller than half that. Put a small eye screw through the middle of the lid and used JB Weld to hold it there. Then got a can of spray foam and filled the bottles. Screwed on the caps and JB Welded them in place. Gonna give them a try on the John day for channels this coming year with hopefully a one oz weight... Read more ..read more

good info on the relationship between lure color and light/water conditions...cheers, roger https://www.fix.com/blog/view-from-b...es-underwater/ "Most keen anglers have a favorite lure or fly color, and swear that their choice will out-perform all other offerings. But just how important is color when it comes to lure and fly selection? Well, according to science, not very important at all! Water progressively absorbs or blocks light of different wavelengths, meaning that colors... Read more ..read more

Was filling in for the guy in town that picks up garbage, he's pretty sick. Got to one place and dumped it in the trailer and out poped a jar of fingernail polish with sparkels in it. Thougt it might work well on lead head jigs so scouped it out. Then went into the Bi Mart and found 1/8th oz plain jigs so got a bag, 12 of them. Then went and looked for different sparkles in the finger nail booth and found them and some white, yellow, red and black stuff. Got home and tried it out and kind... Read more ..read more
