NJ/DE Bay Region Fishing Forecast – April 25, 2024

While often called the pink moon, April’s full moon this past Tuesday the 23rd is also referred to as the fish moon; in fact the New Jersey, Delaware region’s native Lenni Lenape people called it a shad moon (shawanamekwee) for the return of that anadromous Delaware River target.  But in this week’s video fishing forecast, it’s not just the shad, but now the bluefish invasion may be underway and the first trophy bluefin of the ’24 season – all 718 pounds of her – was brought into port in New Jersey this past weekend.  Take a tour of Fairfield Fishing Tackle in Essex County and do a ..read more

As we head into the end of the month, the first official weakfish reports have come in as predicted (check out the weakfish plastics articles in the latest glossy issue for new lure options). Stripers spread east on the island weekly, with some fish up to 20 pounds making their way into Peconic Bay in the past week. The inside and outside togging has been consistent with increasing temperatures on both the North and South Shores. We’re also less than a week away from both The Fisherman’s Dreamboat Challenge and Coastal Kayak Clash kicking off this year!         Th ..read more

Schoolie stripers have made as far as the Cape Cod Canal and Martha’s Vineyard this week, while Narragansett Bay is producing some larger fish, some of them already taping out above the slot limit. If you want to target some heavier stripers, western Long Island Sound has fish to 25 pounds taking flutter spoons and mojos. Tog fishing continues to improve, we have news of fish up to 10.5 pounds this week. American shad numbers have exploded since our last report, in both the Connecticut and Merrimack Rivers. Freshwater guys are doing very well with big largemouth bass, tanker smallies and lot ..read more

The good bad, the bad, and the ugly of this week’s 30-minute video fishing forecast for the New Jersey, Delaware Bay region begins with 3 minutes of bad news, as yet another dead humpback washes ashore on LBI.  NOAA Fisheries says, quote, “no whale deaths have been attributed to offshore wind activities” yet given the actual evidence, the court of public opinion begs to know, “have offshore wind activities been found NOT attributing to whale deaths”?  They might be ugly, but boy do they put up a good fight; details on the black drum invasion in Barnegat Bay and a first-hand look fr ..read more

The official opening week for striper season saw solid reports from the western to central parts of the region and even some bass pushing to the island’s eastern end. Back bays on both the north and south shores continued to be the best options for fish up to about 20 pounds, slamming small lures and most natural baits. Tog season has been off to a tough start on the outside reefs due to wind, but when it is possible to get to them, they’re chewing well. The inside bridges and structures are beginning to show better signs of life with the tog in recent days. Sweetwater action remains another ..read more

Every year, there’s a turning point in April, when several species catch fire at the same time. And that turning point happened this past week; with excellent trout fishing, stripers to 30-plus pounds at the herring runs, lots of big largemouth bass, tanker smallies, giant lake trout, inshore codfish, massive brown trout and that’s only just the beginning. Over the coming week we should see a lot more inshore blackfish and a much stronger showing of fresh striped bass migrating in from the south and west. Water temps from Norwalk to Cape Cod are either flirting with 50 degrees, or have alrea ..read more
