Flies and Tactics for Papio in HI?

I have to confess - I've packed along the fly rod for two trips to HI in the past six years and to say I've been humbled would be an understatement. "Humiliated" would be more apt. On a trip to Waikoloa six years ago I managed to bring in a handful of trumpetfish, and on a trip to Kauai last year I managed to bring in....nothing. I didn't have much time to fish outside of the early AM, but when I did fish I fished hard - so it's not like I wasn't trying. I did tons of Googling, WFF-thread... Hello! I’m pretty new to WA, moved down in November. I’ve been having a blast trout fishing, but I heard about dogfish and it caught my eye. I’ve tried a few piers in Tacoma and Olympia with no luck. Someone told me to try harstine island, and I’m wondering if anyone’s gone down there before. Just wanna catch one for some fun, catch and release. Thanks ..read more

Hi fishing fellows around the world. Here in Finland winter is starting to turn slowly to a spring. Probably about after one month of more waiting, pike fly fishing starts. How has been your season for pike/musky fly fishing? Is it going already/starting soon or are you living that kind of area that it's bossible to fish all around the year? How about saltwater fly fishing there? I have been tying pike flies every day bases. Older trustable flies and new models. I have a link to a video... In the market for flat boots that protect my feet and ankles from coral. I have some zip up's that i'm comfortable on sandy bottoms. I'm wondering what alternate flats boots that people have worn in lieu of boots from Simms or Orvis? I read on a pages somewhere about using converse one stars b/c they are comfortable - provide stability and don't have metal grommets. For the life of me - I can't find them in a high top version. I've seen VANs that might fit the bill. Has anyone... non-traditional flats wading boots ..read more

I'm down on Long Island for a couple weeks and am doing the DYI bonefish thing. My hat is off to those of you who can do this! They are hard to see, hard to find, and hard to catch. Not sure what I'm doing but am having fun walking the flats and trying. All good things JJ ..read more

I bought a 15' Hobie Power Skiff center console last summer and I'm starting to get it set up for fishing. It was repowered over the winter and had an MFD installed. Now it's time for top and bottom paint, and some other minor repairs before it's ready to hit the salt. I'm trying to get some ideas on how to set it all up and would love to see some pictures of smaller boats that WFFers are using in the salt. I looked for a picture of mine but don't seem to have it on this computer. Here's a... Boats for the salt ..read more

Any luck? Saw one truck with a WFF sticker, and a few guys who looked like promos for the flyfishing industry fishing down there (with the amount of stickers on thier vehicles). Just curious how you all were doing down there. Had one day (of course I don't carry a rod anymore in my truck, just my luck) where I saw fish rising near the bridge. Tide was great, light wind, and weather was perfect to be enjoying and had to just watch from the bleachers ..read more
