New Striper Rod, Sage or Orvis

I’m going to buy my first saltwater rod, primarily for stripers. I’m pretty well set on a 9’, 9 weight rod. I can get a pretty decent deal on both a Sage R8 Salt and an Orvis Helios 4 so my choice is down to these 2 rods. I live in a rural area without the opportunity to cast both rods. Has anyone cast rods, and if so did you have a marked preference for either and if so, why? I understand that your likes might not match mine, just looking for some first hand experience. I’ve been... New Striper Rod, Sage or Orvis ..read more

Ok everyone: So as I transition into retirement, I am expanding my fishing portfolio. I have been a blueliner western trout fisherman for 50 years - currently working on the western native Trout Challenge. I have one of those fly for a year passes on a "cheapo" airlines - but they do fly to PR, costa Rica, several other Caribbean locations, so my plan is fly in "light" minimal gear - fly rod -spinning rod - some tackle - (maybe my snorkel Gear, and thats it. I just want to spend 4 or 5 days... The other side of PR - Culebra & Vieques ..read more

My wife and I are traveling to San Pedro at the end of the month and will be bringing our fly rods. We have two guided trips booked, but plan on a day or two of DIY fishing. This is our first time saltwater fly fishing so we are looking for some recommendation's on where to go and what fly patterns work well at the end of April. We will be renting a golf cart for the week and plan to hopefully obtain some paddle boards or kayaks at least on of the days. Any and all advice would be greatly... Does Anyone Have Experience with Sailfish on Fly?

I was traveling with my family recently and saw that a captain I used to do some big game fishing with (when I still trolled for big game) now offers fly fishing for sailfish. I know he's legit and his prices are very fair, so I'm thinking about chartering for a few days. It looks like it would be interesting to do, but it would require that I buy a 14wt outfit that won't get much use otherwise. Does anyone here have any experience fishing for Sails? Would you recommend trying it ..read more

Hey guys, I am heading down to the palm beach area by the airport at the end of may. I am from Cleveland, Ohio and used to fishing great lakes stuff up here, mostly rivers for steelhead, trout and smallies. I booked a guide to fish the salt but would also like to fish some freshwater residential stuff. Would love to hook up on a peacock and snakehead, those are a couple target species I have. I don't need any specific spots but would like some guidance on how I can find residential ponds... Where to fish freshwater(palm beach area ..read more
