Fished my local beach from a gravel bar that stretches out nearly a mile known simply as the Street, waded out a long way at low tide and had just one nice plump bass about 3lb, I also caught my first herring gull, a pb! Luckily only lightly hooked in the foot so not too much drama releasing it. I was amazed how hundreds of gulls flocked round in support of their comrade, or maybe just laughing at it for being so stupid. A stunning sunrise as well.       ..read more

Hythe 21st August

Made the thirty five mile trip to Hythe early doors this morning for a spot of lure fishing. Disappointed on arrival to find the water more coloured than I would like, only two bait anglers along the miles of beach which didn't inspire any confidence. Spent the best part of a couple of hours chucking all sorts of lures without a touch, final throw of the dice was a red Gill attached to a Bombarda  which saved me a blank with a nice shiny garfish., often catch them here and never anywhere else.   Always finish this trip with a coffee at my favourite beach cafe ..read more

Mackeral are extremely reliable creatures, for the past two years they have arrived at Hythe in the same week, this year was no different, although sadly in much less numbers as is being reported around the country. Didn't use feathers just a lrf rod with small lures for some great sport, they came and went in 45 minutes! Amazingly there wasn't another angler on the beach, word obviously hasn't got around ..read more

When this flashed up on my Iphone last night, the last thing I thought I'd be doing is going fishing this morning.   The rain started about 1am and was torrential for a couple of hours. I woke at 5-30am and all was calm and the wind was slight but importantly a southerly. High tide was at 8am, a quick cuppa and a slice of toast before heading to the beach for 7am. The sea was lovely and calm and for the first time in weeks free of weed thanks to the rare southerly winds. Chucked a variety of lures, metals, plastics, top water, shallow divers, Dexter's, you name it, not a touch. Last ..read more

#1 Another trip to the Hoe today. Can't believe how windy it was, a case of anchoring everything down or lose it. It was a warm wind with plenty of sand in it, felt like I was in Lanzarote (I wish).   Two carp rods out with ragworm on paternoster rigs, it was hard work but managed nine small wrasse in the four hours I tolerated the gusting winds, hoped for some mackerel but the water was very coloured.     ..read more

On the beach at 5 am, water clarity, weather, lack of weed, all perfect, all I needed was some fish. Tried a number of lures and lost one of my expensive ones No matter what I tried the fish either weren't there or just didn't want to play. Never a wasted trip when you can admire a sunrise before the rest of the world awakes.   Returned a few hours later at low tide in the forlorn hope I might find my lost lure, bingo, found it within seconds....result ..read more
