Weather looked good all weekend - but my fishing buddy was in Benidorm until Saturday night - so plans were made for Sunday - however the wind was freshening and turning more easterly - so not ideal.  After a failed attempt to get mackerel in Portlands entrance we opted to seek shelter under White Nothe - East of the Bay. New ground for us - but worth a go! It was slow - i only managed 4 doggies, Tim managed doggies, Smoothounds, Bream and a thornie, his son had dogs and a blonde ray. wind was fresh all day - but the sun was out and we were afloat - so all good!       &n ..read more

Finally calm enough to get out of the Haven, well, for a few hours at least. Loads of small pollack on baited feathers so switched to slow jigs when tide allowed and soft plastics on portland rigs when it picked up, to pick out the better pollack up to around 5lb. Back into the Haven as wind picked up to find plenty more dogfish! Ballan Wrasse, the varying colours are amazing, camera never does it justice, poor cod and also pouting and launce to add to my species for the year. More huge ships in the Haven, it certainly makes you wonder how much gas and oil we use ..read more

Very early kick off as the weather was due to kick up mid morning, which it did.  Not much happening and I think that the amount of fresh water is pushing fish offshore but I managed a pout for the species comp and a whiting that was very thin by changing from bigger baits to scratching gear.  Looking forward to warmer weather and fish moving in to feed, but that's a month off I think, however we did see some gulls taking something on the surface where the pier kicks up the tidal race so hopeful that there will be early bait fish for the predators.  ..read more

managed 2 days this week, Tuesday weather looked good, I still havnt grasped the idea of letting the sea a few days to settle down, couldn't get out of the Haven but managed to fish the entrance, where we found plenty of pollack seemingly feeding midwater on herring, it was a fish a chuck, though my daughter was getting more than the lions share, bloody pheromones! 1? as the sea state worsened we headed inwards to shelter only to find dog city. Thursday morning was looking good in the sheltered waters if the Haven, I did try to venture to where we found the pollack in abundance Tuesday but the ..read more

First trip out for a few weeks and only the second of the year. Just a short one again over high with another club boat out. We both steamed about 10 miles to a bank on the edge of our old club boundaries to see if the hounds had turned up yet. We started on the very outer contour. Was a bit slow with a few dogs, straps and thornbacks and the other boat which was on top of the bank was faring better. As the tide eased we upped the anchor and shortened the rope out and repositioned closer to the bank. This improved sport with more of the same in greater numbers and also a small spotty for my da ..read more

after Storm Nelson on Thursday/Friday there was a very slight break in the weather forecast for Saturday which had us up at the crack of sparrows - for a 6.45am meet at the boat.  I had the inlaws staying for Easter and my Birthday so Phil joined me and Tim on Tim's boat.  we tried for mackerel first but failed miserably - so soon headed out to the 'Hot spot' as i'm now calling it - 5miles off, 80ft water, mixed ground - throws up all sorts.  We fished small baits for bream and were not disappointed - 28 to the boat before we lost count - big ones, small ones, must be feeding up ..read more

Slow but we managed a few more fish to the species comp, my mate had a doggie and a codling and I managed a small haddock. Beautiful day out and we were watching dolphin getting frisky with each other on the way back. Another 4 weeks and fishing should liven up but good to see fresh spring run codling and decent whiting come aboard.  Little doggie for lovers of the K9s ..read more

Just had some old sharking friends stay with me from the UK targeting mako's. Just before their arrival I was feeling confident of ticking the species off their list, with mako just about everywhere from inshore reefs to offshore, even the day they arrived a 264kg mako was landed. However the weather turned to pretty much to 2m swell on 1.5-2m seas for the entire period they were here, not to mention a couple of boats I had lined up falling through due to a split fuel tank on our first day and other issues. So it was down to my 15ft boat to get us offshore each day. Seals were a menace soon f ..read more
