AFAIK, we're screening the original workprint that's played at MoMA and elsewhere. At least, I haven't been told otherwise. FWIW, it doesn't look or sound egregiously unfinished, and I would go as far to say it's perfectly releasable, but I imagine modern day standards are much more polished. (I vaguely recall one or two moments of dialogue that probably should be re-recorded as the on-set sound wasn't too great, but I've seen plenty of great indie movies with rougher moments of audio than that.) Not sure if it had the same level of exposure in the UK, but how could you not mention the UB40 video from Sliver, that aired pretty much on a continuous loop in the early to mid 90s on VH1? Just saw the Cannes Classics 2024 lineup and noticed the 'SMPO' clue was almost certainly for Belocchio's Slap the Monster on Page One, which already has me sold as it's a 4K restoration and stars one Gian Maria Volonté. A weird week. The single big premiere is M. Night Shyamalan's Old showing on Channel 4 at 9 p.m. on Saturday 4th.
