I like Downey a lot, but Greaser’s Palace has all of his worst traits amplified to the max with none of the good. He can be an incisive and funny artist using Dadaism well. This has the most in common with Two Tons of Turquoise to Taos Tonight, but that film was secure in being a bunch of nonsense and also mercifully short. Palace instead absently mindedly brings up TOPICS in big flashing letters coming across as insure about being a Tim and Eric predecessor. The comedy is just screeches and scrambles without anything funny happening or being said making the normally satisfying 90 minute runt ..read more

Criterion's Happiness has disappointing audio. They put the DVDs audio into a lossless container and applied extra filtering to it. No info yet whether this is an error or Criterion got busted but I thought I'd mention it maybe for Chris to put into his eventual review. Yeah, the audio isn't great, so that might explain it. I was putting it to source, but hadn't even compared it to the DVD. Statistics: Posted by cdnchris — Wed Sep 18, 2024 6:24 pm ..read more

Lots of stuff next week. Ridley Scott's The Last Duel is on Channel 4 at 9:25 p.m. on Saturday 21st. Channel 4's South Asian film season continues with Kottukkaali (The Adamant Girl) at 2:40 a.m. on Tuesday 24th (that trailer does not give away much so the RadioTimes write up is "A young engaged woman falls for a man from a lower caste, so her family - led by her jealous uncle - decide to ask a shaman to 'exorcise' her"); and Paradise at 2:20 a.m. in the early hours of Wednesday 25th. Film4 is showing Official Competition at 9 p.m. on Tuesday 24th (I had to check imdb after looking at the t ..read more

Bringing Out the Dead should be moved to the solid category as it does feature the occasional spotty highlight encoding in HDR10 after all as confirmed by more knowledgeable BR members. If played in DV, does this correct the issue? (i.e. is it Red if your player supports DV?) Can't say that yet as the BR.com people weren't as precise in that regard. I'll have my copy tomorrow (wisely pre-ordered from Amazon this once) and will check. I hope that it'll be an improvement but I'm not expecting anything night-and-day as the base HDR10 layer has to be encoded better in the first place. I don't ..read more

David Mackenzie replied to my question at BR about the encode of The Chronicles of Riddick and he actually did the encodes of all discs in the set. The mentioning of Engine House is (another) Arrow printing error in the booklet. He also encoded 88 Film's Project A 1 & 2 set and Chen lung, who went above and beyond for this set, posted technical details on this page. Extensive efforts have been made with the audio as well. Clearly a fantastic release. Bringing Out the Dead should be moved to the solid category as it does feature the occasional spotty highlight encoding in HDR10 after all ..read more

I admire this film a great deal. How does the MoC blu ray compare to the Twilight Time? A few are saying that the MoC equivalents of the same film have been inferior, for example House of Bamboo due to an apparently inferior encoding job.
