Quality hose quick disconnects with a 5/8" passage?

I’ve been looking around at hose quick disconnects, an some good prospects are the Dramm, Geka, and Eley. Does anyone know of a quality quick disconnect that has a 5/8" passage? That way I could use the same disconnects at the hose bib and end devices. Eley is the bomb, but with a 3/4" passage, they are very bulky. Dramm makes both a ‘standard’ style disconnect with a 1/2" passage and swivel, as well as a face-mating quick connect that is larger diameter. Geka - The passage is 1/2" and swivels. Typical German quality engineering. Thanks! 1 post - 1 participant Read full topic ..read more

The worst garden equipment

I have had some duds but to me, this is the worst design in the history of pruning snips. Also I am dumb. I refuse to throw them away, but literally every time I use them I cut my palm, or finger pads pretty good. For some reason these things are sharp on the inside (as one would expect) and however even sharper on both outside edges. I always in my absentminded-ness forget the outside edge was made by Hitori Hanzo and drag my finger across it while carrying it to the next pruning location. Absolutely need to trash them, because I’m too dumb to use them without mostly pruning my fingers 15 po ..read more

Jalapeños not sprouting…

About a month ago I planted a bunch of jalapeño, Tabasco, and sweet bell pepper seeds. I’ve grown all of these with great success in my incubator before with seeds from the previous year‘s crop (for the bell peppers I just used seeds from a fresh pepper at the shop grocery store.) . However, this time the jalapeño Tabasco seeds are from five years ago (stored correctly I think). They are from two separate fully ripe fruits of each type. Almost all the Bell pepper seeds sprouted within a few days, about half the Tabasco seeds bit later. But none of the jalapeño seeds have sprouted yet, it’s bee ..read more

Kanga-Rhu rhubarb: The bad, the annoying, and the frustrating

A few years back, I bought some Kanga-Rhu rhubarb from Gurney’s to use up a gift card. It sounded very promising: heat tolerant, extra red, extra sweet, extra everything. I really prize redness in rhubarb, and the promise of a variety that could be harvested further into summer made it seem like just the ticket. Two years later, I’ve had nothing but disappointment from this plant. To start with, the plant they sent was a quite small TC plant that clearly needed a few more weeks in the greenhouse (at a minimum). I know rhubarb is pretty bulletproof, so I planted it anyway. Lots of compost, free ..read more

First bananas mistake

Our first bananas from our indoor dwarf banana tree! However, I didn’t notice them when I laid the plant down outside to root prune it and the main trunk with bananas on it snapped! Man, I have been waiting 7 or 8 years for these bananas!!! So frustrating!!! Too green, but I’m trying to ripen them in a bag. This plant needed to be root pruned about 3 or 4 years ago! Very root bound! Anyway, with a good prune and new soil, hopefully they’ll come back quicker next time. It shoots up pups from the base. You live and learn! Fortunately I’ve been letting another pup grow right with the other one, s ..read more

Study: invasive vs native plants for birds, no clear difference

Analysis revealed instances where native trees were actually poorer foraging resources for songbirds than certain species of invasive shrubs As have several studies before, a recent study from New England has shown that the categories “invasive” and “native” don’t predict if a species will be better or worse at supporting bugs and birds. The authors pointed out that: Clearly some invasives are worse than others and it’s not as simple as all invasive plants must go. While we certainly do not suggest that invasive plants have no negative ecological impacts, our study shows that coexisting nat ..read more

Thorny hedge barrier

Long story short, my mom wants to put some type of thorny barrier along about 20-30 ft of her property that people like to park on (fencing isn’t practical) There would need to be some tolerance for road run off, Z7a, it’s also full sun. Between the various black/raspberry etc or another berry type hedge/shrub. Taste isn’t as important as well. Does anyone know one that’s particularly extra thorny with a high degree of suckering? Doesn’t need to be tall but more of a spreading. Or anyone else dealt with this before and put one in? Pretty much looking for the opposite of what a lot of stuff is ..read more

Need help to decide the fate of this decorative(?) cherry

This large cherry tree was hit by very late hard frost last year in full leaves and lost almost all its leaves. Leaves regrew on some branches but not on others. Also it produced a lot of new shoots along the trunk during last year. After the winter it is in bloom, but about half of the branches dead. I was going to cut dry branches when I saw the damage to its trunk. I am not sure if it is canker or frost damage, the top portion of the wood started to heal, but the bottom doesn’t look good, it has dead black decomposed tissues behind the bark. I am not sure if this is decorative cherry or unr ..read more
