India’s manufacturing sector that accounts for roughly 16-17% of the national gross domestic product (GDP) suffers from serious gender imbalance. Just 12% of the workforce in manufacturing in the country are women. Even within this larger grouping, if we look at only “organised” manufacturing, women participation has remained a constant 20% for nearly two decades, according to a recent Annual Survey of Industries (ASI). Globally women account for around 30% of the workforce in the manufacturing sector. India’s severe gender imbalance in manufacturing is in sharp contrast to the agriculture sec ..read more

Human history, or human civilization, is a microscopic blip in the timeline of our planet. However, in this infinitesimal fraction of Earth’s existence, we have managed to plunder her resources to an extent that threatens to be irreversible. More than anything else, World Environment Day should be seen as a time for reflection – on what we have done over the last year, of what we hope to do over the next year, and how our challenges have evolved. We have all witnessed the devastation caused as the Coronavirus pandemic wreaked havoc across the world. Every time a forest or natural habitat is de ..read more

Story of steel production begins with Iron making and for any integrated steel plant (ISP) like ours, Conversion of heterogenous Raw materials into hot Liquid Iron involves pre-processing of raw materials before its ready to be charged into Blast furnaces. This preprocessing involves agglomeration of iron ore into Sinter and pellets and conversion of coal into coke so as to optimize the outcomes of Iron Making at Blast furnace which is the nerve center of entire Iron Making. About a decade ago we stood on the brink of a technological revolution that was to fundamentally alter the way we live, work & communicate. With the benefit of hindsight, we can clearly see how the change has manifested and impacted all our lives. An electricity-conducting-material-coated-glass surface (read touchscreen) manages our lives and livelihoods with aplomb. The lines between the physical, digital, and biological have been substantially blurred by a fusion of technologies that are enabling the 4th Industrial Revolution. Unlike previous Industrial Revolutions, the 4th one has scale ..read more

Almost every successful business, no matter what its size is today, was once a start-up. With the passage of time, this self-evident truth can be easily forgotten. It is in that spirit that we should remember and celebrate the life of Jamsetji Nusserwanji Tata, the founder of the $130 billion (revenue) Tata Group with a combined market capitalisation of its 29 listed companies at over $300 billion or around 300 unicorns!  At the end of 2022, there were around 85 unicorns (start-ups with more than $1 billion in valuation) and only a handful that are profitable. So, what can today’s start-u ..read more

Among the many of sports Tata Steel supports, Chess holds a very special place, least of which is its historical association with India. Known in its ancient version as Chaturanga, dating back to more than 1500 years, India’s association with chess outdates every modern sport that has a huge following in the country. It is but natural that today India is home to some of the smartest chess players the world has seen and will continue to enrich this great tradition. This is perhaps the strongest reason why Tata Steel is going to great lengths to rejuvenate the culture of playing chess to new hei ..read more

Biodiversity is one of the nine critical planetary boundaries that keeps the Earth’s environment stable and energised enough to support life. Currently, we are in the midst of the sixth mass extinction (the last one having marked the end of dinosaurs) and about to breach this planet’s boundary, with hundreds of thousands of species at the risk of complete elimination. Five primary pressures including changes in use of the land and sea, direct overexploitation of natural resources, climate change, pollution and the spread of invasive species are causing a steep decline in biodiversity.
