Our Dash of Fantasy Blog

I love writing, but by gosh my ADHD makes it a pain. I am currently working on six stories. Well, Five since I just finished one this morning. I cannot focus on any thing for more than a few moments, it makes things fun but hard.   Anyone else have the feeling, living that experience?   I think it's part of being a pantser in terms of writing...   So... yeah ..read more

The Joy of Writing what you want to read
Our Dash of Fantasy Blog
by Mika Mathews
9M ago
So many people focus on writing what you know, a valid thought to have. However, what about what you want to read? For me that would be loving parents, and having characters validated by their parents. It would be peaceful family moments and finding harmony in your mental health.  If you followed that train of thought, where would you find your inspiration? In what realm, what path would you find peace as a writer?  We all have a path to find in our writing, what is yours?  In all of my stories, from the Silver Coin to Born Mistakes, I have found that path in found family ..read more

Ignoring Cupid is odd...
Our Dash of Fantasy Blog
by Mika Mathews

I think it's foolish to ignore Cupid's impact, or rather what impact he has in story. Taking free will to force love between two other beings... yeah that is not all different from using date rape drugs. So why is he never a villian in stories? Why is he always a passive figure. I feel like we, as writers, are really dropping the ball on potential antagonists in media.  It's always vampires or the Fey or witches, but never beings so directly potentially useful in our stories and tales. It feels like a let down to ignore Cupid as one such example...  Other ideas? The Magic Mirro ..read more

We all learn somehow

So, my brain is weird. Sometimes I just get things, other times I need a push in a direction. For context, I am... well I now identify as nonbinary but was going by cis before. I had been going by Mika and not Michael for years at that point. As a penname, and in real life since I just liked Mika better, it felt more... me I guess. It started as a way to have a nickname, I was in a college class with seven Michaels and later realized I had no nickname unlike all my siblings. As the most hated of my family, that kind of hurt even with everything else that went on,... Anyway, I was in my ..read more

Why the Blessed Babies?
Our Dash of Fantasy Blog
by Mika Mathews

So I love to read and write, but I don't know if you've noticed but there is a whole lot of blessed babies in media. Superman, Harry Potter, Percy Jackson, Luke and Anakin and Leia. Aliens, Demigods, Wizards, Jedis! So many beings that with minimal effort just overcome and overpower their peers, their enemies and so on. I never got that, understood that... Where is the power of effort, of hard work? Why are all these main characters blessed and powerful? They earn nothing, they are just the best from the start or near start. Luke became the best jedi with less than a few years of trainin ..read more

Whispers in the Cave
Our Dash of Fantasy Blog
by Mika Mathews

This is a small idea I have for a story, free to a good home...  Two old married people live in a set of caves on a mountain for decades.. She tended the gardens, he tended the ponds for fish. They could not hear each other all day so they whispered I love you in a box so they could hear the other whenever they pleased. Then, as time moved on just before they died as one, they released the boxes into the caves. The whispers became the echoes in the cave, telling I love you to everyone that entered, a reminder of their love ..read more

The Ugly Stepsisters- As Evil as they are painted?
Our Dash of Fantasy Blog
by Mika Mathews
1y ago
It is an easy thing to hate the ugly, humans have a natural bias in favor of the beautiful and charming. It is an evil thing to judge people for their outward deeds, ignoring their reasonings and mindset. However, if we are to move past our judgment, we have to consider why they do what they do, especially children.  This brings me to the Ugly Stepsisters from Cinderella. I hate how they are painted as evil, when in fact they are literally children molded by their mother to be a certain way. They were taught to be abusive to Cinderella, to treat her as a servant and ignore her needs ..read more

Why not both- Male/Female centric stories
Our Dash of Fantasy Blog
by Mika Mathews
1y ago
So often I have noticed, when stories are focused on a male or female specific view... we get a weird bit of sexism. Girls hating on guys and guys being worthless if it is female centric, and females being backseated blow up dolls or shrews that do nothing but get saved if it is male centric. It is rare to see a story that is well,... not like that. A story of egalitarism, where there is equality and respect across the genders.  What causes this though and why is it so rare? The first story that comes across well is Inuyasha, then all of Rick Riordan's work and naturally the Last Ai ..read more
