Escif plays with public space in a way that is both original and rare. Street art always had a conceptual art attitude when it was first becomign a genre in the 2000s, and Escif was one of the rare artists who was able to create work that was both playful and seeped in social activism and place in the public realm. In the vein of such artists like Rirkrit Tiravanija, Escif makes the idea and the path to the idea the part of the entire artwork. There is no better example of this than his recent Fallas work in Valencia, Spain.  ..read more

Julian Pace makes you think about the things you love, collect and why your knowledge of popular culture is so subconscious it almost permeates your daily life where you least expect it. Although I have followed sports over my 42 years of life, with both dedicated intensity and sometimes passive observation, Pace's paintings and drawings are recognizable as both iconic and sort of this rare experiment of tracing your steps of memory. On view now at Sotheby's in Beverly Hills is Julian Pace: Beloved Artifacts, a body of work of sports iconography that is a testament to our collective unde ..read more

The thing about FAILE is that they are always trying to take you somewhere you feel like you have been but may have dreamt. Since coming into street art at the pivotal moment of the early 2000s and their various explorations into installation, muralism, nightlife and fine art, you recongnize the world of FAILE even though it's something completely fresh and new. Body and blood seems like the perfect title to an Alvin Ong exhibition. His second solo show in Australia, this one at Ames Yavuz in Sydney, feels like the artist is fully in bloom with the audience, a conscious examination of home and place, an opening of his soul in all its depth in terms of religion and coming of age narratives and even mundane in-between moments of everyday tasks. It's like a diary of how life can be just as fascinating, that ritual can be so simple, even in the chores of everyday life. With the backdrop of what the gallery notes is "the rituals of inclusion and ..read more

The exhibition’s title stems from the artists aesthetics, sitting in between the physical reality and fantasy inspired by the world they work and live in, figuration and the its shift towards abstraction; the conceptual, sensual, and spiritual concerns that underpin their practice. The Intimate and Paradoxical Way to Paint "Cloud Cover" by Aubrey Levinthal

What I have always loved about Aubrey Levinthal's work, the Philadelphia based painter having a solo show currently at Haverkampf Leistenschneider in Berlin, is that she paints memory the way it actually situatues in our lives. Some moments are clear, with a sheen of haze, something a tad foggy but the characters and the moment just clear enough. And some are so distanat or unresoved that they appear blurred, almost too difficult to bring to the mind but still in some form of dreamlike understaning. If you see Aubrey's shows, they sort of give this experience of clarity and something just out ..read more
