Our successful children and young people’s peer to peer mentoring scheme, for 10-24 year olds in East London, has received funding to roll out across London. This is great news for young people across the city who are in need of support as they navigate living with sickle cell. Michael was diagnosed with the HbSC genotype prenatally. Growing up with the benefit of a paediatrician nurse as a mother he learnt to understand the triggers of crises and how to manage his condition and general wellbeing. In adulthood Michael has sought to understand more about how Sickle Cell affects people differently and the various ways the condition can be handled and managed. My Sickle Cell has always been – and will likely always be – very private and I have therefore always had a great fear of discussing it publicly. It took me years to admit to myself, let alone others, that I even have Sickle Cell.
