Designing spaces that seamlessly flow from one room to the next for a cohesive vibe is our specialty. So, when we’re retained to design an entire home from scratch, we can’t wait to dive into the fresh canvas. And that’s just what we did for a family who had recently renovated their weekend getaway in Cold Spring, New York. We are charged with creating a home that would not only be a welcome retreat from the hustle and bustle of their everyday life in New York City, but also one that would be ideal for Airbnb guests. We’re thrilled with how it’s coming together. Here’s a peek at the progres ..read more

I have always been intrigued by Dan Buettner’s identification of the five original blue zones – areas across the globe with the healthiest, longest-living populations – but then I watched the Netflix series Live to 100: Secrets of the Blue Zones and I was transfixed! In his articles, book, and the documentary, Buettner reveals the habits, diets, and lifestyles of centenarians living in these areas. His revelations have not only sparked a desire to transform how I live, but also where I live, both in a geographical sense (I personally find Martha’s Vineyard to be its own mini blue zone and t ..read more

One of the best ways to have a happy life is to cultivate a happy home. It might sound trite, but it’s based on science. The space we spend time in plays a major role in our psychological well being. In fact, there’s an entire area of psychology, called Environmental Psychology, that focuses on the interaction between people and the design of a space – such as its lighting, colors, layout, scale, and materials – and the way it impacts how we feel. But you don’t need science to tell you this is true. Just think about how you feel in the different spaces you’re drawn to. You’ll realize there ..read more

You’ve just spent a fabulous time on Cape Cod soaking up the sun on its picturesque beaches, aimlessly strolling through quaint downtowns, enjoying a good read in your rented beach house, eating your fair share of fresh seafood, and maybe even taking in a spectacular whale watch. Overall, it was an incredible vacation with the most relaxing vibes making you never want to leave! The atmosphere just has a magnetism that draws you in. As the old song goes, “You’re sure to fall in love with old Cape Cod.”
But unfortunately, vacations come to an end and we have to return to the real world once a ..read more

One of my favorite things to do is ride my bike through the streets of Martha’s Vineyard. It never gets old. There’s so much to see and take in – the homes, landscaping, endless views of the water, sunrises and sunsets – that each ride is a new adventure. What I love most as I traverse through its various communities, which evoke a commingled coastal and country feel, is the vibe created by the diverse landscape, architecture, and cultural influences that dot each pocket of the island. Martha’s Vineyard welcomes and speaks to all people. This is the same vibe I strive to bring to each of my ..read more

We just got back from our annual trip to High Point Spring Market, which is one of the biggest events of the year for the interior design industry. It was a whirlwind week of immersion in the latest trends for 2023. We walked, and walked, and walked some more – over 11.5 million square feet of showroom space featuring around 2,000 exhibitors! – and sat in on some fabulous panels to get a pulse for what’s hot right now. We returned with plenty of inspiration to pour into our client projects

The ceiling is often neglected in interior design. But here at The Red Shutters, we like to treat it as the fifth wall. Although the ceiling is a large area – it’s as big as the floor – homeowners typically fail to consider it when designing a room. But giving the ceiling some attention can make a HUGE impact on the overall feel of a space. As we like to say, “Always Look Up!”
“Most clients never think of incorporating the ceiling into the room’s design,” says Marina Case, The Red Shutters’ principal designer. “When we do, they are just in shock at the results. It creates the perfect unexpe ..read more
