Dear Friends,
After 15 years without an inflation adjustment to Medicaid rates, New York State nursing homes need a 20% increase in order to compete for staff and improve access to quality care for older adults. Since the last time rates were adjusted, costs have risen by 42%!
The Governor’s 2023-24 Budget Proposal includes a 5% increase to the nursing home Medicaid rate. This is a good foundation, but not enough to enable nursing homes to recruit and retain the staff needed to bring more nursing home beds back into operation and reduce strain on the larger health care system.

Aging is a simple reality and truth, even if it may not be a pleasant thing for all of us to think about. Just as change and growth are inevitable aspects of life, so too is the process of aging. Instead of “aging” being a word that so many fear or deem undesirable, perhaps it is time we embrace the word and all the positives that come with it.
Aging means we get to keep living. It means more time in the human experience, building memories with loved ones, sharing stories, connecting with friends old and new, learning and practicing a new hobby or activity, helping our community and so much mo ..read more

Cloverwood Senior Living had a “tea-riffic” idea, combining a summer afternoon tea for residents with a back to school supplies drive! Residents who donated school supplies were treated to a special event featuring a variety of assorted finger sandwiches, cookies, hot tea and freshly brewed iced tea as a thank you for giving back.
Thirty back packs and a variety of school supplies were collected, including notebooks, binders, pencils, erasers, glue, crayons, markers and much more. The school supplies were delivered to Tom Wahl’s in Brighton for its annual back to school drive, and will be dist ..read more

April is National Volunteer Recognition Month. This is a wonderful opportunity to extend our heartfelt thanks to our over 120 active volunteers, who do so much to bring joy to our Members.
In what kinds of ways do our volunteers make a difference? Where do I begin? Our volunteers:
– Sing, play instruments and perform. Our Members LOVE music, and the sounds of a sing-along or lively piano playing lift spirits like nothing else!
– Make our Friendly Gift Shop a great place to visit! They know our Members and their families and greet them by name, help them choose items like candy, gifts or jewelr ..read more

We are very proud, humbled and excited about the Friendly Home’s ranking as the #1 nursing home in New York State by Newsweek!
Proud because this recognition is due to the exceptional efforts put forth by our team of health care heroes every day to serve our Members with care, compassion and excellence. Even as the challenges of the global COVID-19 pandemic continue, our staff’s hard work and dedication never falters. As one of our Members recently said: “The Friendly Home is #1 because they make us #1!”
Humbled because our organization has been a trusted partner in delivering quality care and ..read more

1) Boost your hydration
Seniors are more susceptible to dehydration than younger people because they don’t sweat or recognize thirst.
Seniors should drink plenty of water before heading outdoors. When you think you’ve had enough, drink another glass!
The standard suggestion is 6-8 glasses of water per day.
2) Dress for success and apply sunscreen
Wear loose fitting clothes, light colors preferred – you’ll feel cooler and more comfortable.
Be seen to be safe – hence the light-colored clothing.
Use at least SPF 30 sunscreen and make sure to slather on any and all areas of exposed skin.
