Led by the Administration for Community Living (ACL), OAM is a time for us to acknowledge the contributions and achievements of older Americans, highlight important trends, and strengthen our commitment to honoring our older citizens. NY Must Provide a 20% Nursing Home Medicaid Rate Increase in Final Budget!

Dear Friends, After 15 years without an inflation adjustment to Medicaid rates, New York State nursing homes need a 20% increase in order to compete for staff and improve access to quality care for older adults. Since the last time rates were adjusted, costs have risen by 42%! The Governor’s 2023-24 Budget Proposal includes a 5% increase to the nursing home Medicaid rate. This is a good foundation, but not enough to enable nursing homes to recruit and retain the staff needed to bring more nursing home beds back into operation and reduce strain on the larger health care system. Cloverwood Senior Living had a “tea-riffic” idea, combining a summer afternoon tea for residents with a back to school supplies drive! Residents who donated school supplies were treated to a special event featuring a variety of assorted finger sandwiches, cookies, hot tea and freshly brewed iced tea as a thank you for giving back. Thirty back packs and a variety of school supplies were collected, including notebooks, binders, pencils, erasers, glue, crayons, markers and much more. 1) Boost your hydration Seniors are more susceptible to dehydration than younger people because they don’t sweat or recognize thirst. Seniors should drink plenty of water before heading outdoors. When you think you’ve had enough, drink another glass! The standard suggestion is 6-8 glasses of water per day. 2) Dress for success and apply sunscreen Wear loose fitting clothes, light colors preferred – you’ll feel cooler and more comfortable.
