Boston College (BC) and St. Columbkille Partnership School (STCPS) are hosting a fundraising event – race to educate – with a 5K Run/Walk for ages 12 and up, and a kids fun run for ages 11 and below. It will take place on April 27 and start at Boston College Alumni Stadium (140 Commonwealth Ave, Chestnut Hill). Register online BEFORE April 25 (Kids $15, Adults $30) or register in-person on the day of the race.

The LigerBots, Newton’s dual-high-school FIRST Robotics team, traveled to Houston last weekend, April 17-20, to compete in the FIRST World Championship — an international competition that caps the FIRST robotics competition season. This was the first time in six years that the LigerBots had qualified for “the Worlds” — joining 600 other teams from 58 countries.

Last Friday, April 29th, Taylor Swift released her new album, The Tortured Poets’ Department. In celebration, Newton micropress Tandeta Books organized two community events hosted by Newton Centre businesses. The first was a tasting of two drinks mentioned in Swift’s music — champagne and screwtop rosé — at The Cork and Board at 1207 Centre Street. Proprietor Ryan Gott led a Taylor trivia contest complete with prizes, as well as a blind taste test to rank four different varieties of rosé. This weekend (April 27-28), Newton Open Studios (NOS) will highlight the city’s thriving arts scene as 33 venues — homes, studios, and group locations — host the works of more than 130 creators. Venues are generally open 11AM-5PM both days. Each venue will be marked by printed signs with red balloons. Where possible, NOS encourages visitors to use bicycles and carpooling to travel among venues.

The Society of St. Vincent de Paul, a charity that helps those in need in Newton, is holding a clothing drive on Sunday, April 28, 9AM-Noon and 4PM-6PM. The truck will be located in the parking lot of Our Lady Help of Christians church (parking lot entrance at 279 Adams Street).
Accepted items include: clothing of all types and all seasons, coats and shoes, as well as other textile items, such as linens, towels and blankets. Do not bring non-textile items. Donations must be clean and in good condition.

On Sunday, April 21, about 1,000 people learned about the latest green technology while listening to music, getting their faces painted, and meeting some adorable animals, among other activities, at Newton’s third-annual Earth Day Festival.
The event, organized by Green Newton, the city’s Climate Team, and the EV Task Force, was held at Newton North High School and featured businesses, nonprofits, entertainment, and more.
