Understanding a fundamental concept of CCE As a classical Christian school, Rochester Classical Academy (RCA) will have many features that distinguish it from other educational offerings. One of these features—the Trivium—forms the structure of the entire Classical Christian Education (CCE) experience. The Trivium is the division of the K-12 years into three distinct stages: Grammar, Dialectic (also known as Logic), and Rhetoric. Each stage has particular features that are emphasized above but not to the exclusion of features found in the other stages. The Trivium is based on the recognition t ..read more

RCA Has a Home! At Rochester Classical Academy, we believe that the physical structure of a school is not the same as the school itself, no matter the temptation to believe otherwise. Eight months ago, RCA was just an idea (and a nameless one at that!) and as we have moved from being an idea to being a picture of increasing clarity we have been prayerful to keep our hearts and minds focused on that which is important. With respect to a facility, we have sought to have a clean, safe, and functional space filled with character and history, and void of unnecessary distractions that would take awa ..read more

Why We Chose Classical Education

Our Introduction to CCE My husband and I learned about Classical Christian Education while in college. Having read very little philosophy in our respective public educations growing up it was an eye-opening experience to discover and discuss these things in our classes. After just two semesters of a five semester-long class on these topics, I already knew that I wanted to continue my education further, obtain a degree in philosophy, and create some kind of curriculum to teach this material to high schoolers. Imagine my delight and surprise (and relief!) to learn that such a thing already exi ..read more

It’s common today for parents to want their children to be musical, and understandably so! It’s a wonderful thing to take in the music made by your child, be it at home, church, school, or anywhere else. For parents who are not musicians, however, how should they go about raising their kids to be musical? Do they have to wait until their children are school-aged and hope the music teachers are good? Do they need to seek out private music lessons for their young children? Isn’t there a simple, inexpensive way to instill a love of making music outside a “music program?” A simple solution Let’s ..read more

Singapore Math Curiosity and wonder At Rochester Classical Academy, we place a high value on mathematics and the sciences. Instead, with a proven curriculum and teaching methods that build confidence in problem solving, all students can excel at math and enjoy it with the same spirit of curiosity and wonder as any other subject. We are excited to adopt Singapore Math because we believe it addresses all of these goals. S ..read more

Latin: An ancient language with timeless application
Rochester Classical Academy Blog

Though it was once commonly taught in America, Latin has been virtually eliminated from school curriculum over the last few decades. The prevailing view today is that because it is not a spoken language, there is no good reason to study it. By contrast, we say it is essential to study Latin and that we should start in the early grades of our Grammar stage. English’s biggest tributary Although English has words imported from a variety of languages, it remains primarily a hybrid of Latin and Germanic ancestry. At RCA, we first lead young students to master the concrete, everyday words of Germani ..read more
