Sex Addiction Supervision In all areas of therapy, how we meet the client, where they are, and how to begin, we thankfully have so much support from the theories we have trained in. My training in sexual addictions and compulsivity was excellent, the ongoing research, the ICD-11 from WHO and the new research coming through which continually supports the foundations I trained in. Throughout the development process, the templates used to help clients recover ensures best practice continues. Supporting supervisees through their training to practice is not only essential for them but also assis ..read more

Fortnite Porn – What Is That? From qualifying as a psychosexual therapist, like most, I felt the need to explore and train further within the specialist field of sexual addictions/compulsive sexual behaviours. Over the years, I have sought to keep abreast of how porn has changed. Driven because of this famous quote from Justice Stewart (1964) who famously said that while he could not readily define the term “hard-core” pornography, “I know it when I see it.” This keeps me exploring what is out there, to help those that walk through the door, because I don’t pretend to know it all and I’m fa ..read more

In recent years there’s been a lot written about porn induced erectile dysfunction. I’m often asked does this really exist? From a sex therapy perspective, when presented with a client’s erectile dysfunction, there’s a list of possible risk factors which can explain why there is an onset of erectile dysfunction. These risk factors are traditionally age dependant and or because of surgery problems and are: Prostate cancer and prostatectomy Cardiovascular disease Spinal cord injury Hyperlipidaemia – cholesterol Cigarette smoking Depression Atherosclerosis – plaque inside arteries Hypertension ..read more

As of June 4th I have been working from my office, offering face to face as well as zoom and telephone counselling.  One key reason for this is the need to provide confidentiality with zoom from home. I can no longer assure that, as with returning family members, there are too many of us in rooms meaning it simply doesn’t work. I’ve gone through this decision with my supervisors, membership guidelines and assessment of my office. It’s been decided that it’s now Ok for me to return to the office to work from. Some clients will wish to shield and continue to use zoom. Others may wish to r ..read more

Couples Supervision

Couples Supervision I have worked with many therapists over my career and couples supervision is an area that I have extensive knowledge of. I was trained in systemic theory alongside attachment theory, and I find the theory of each so valuable in support of client work, as well as supervising others. We’re always exploring through a different lens to help the relationship see within itself, challenge the systems, the attachment styles, and what that throws up as the challenge to each partner.  Through different choices and new outcomes, they can explore new insights gained from workin ..read more

Psychosexual Supervision I think there is always a challenge when on a course, to become qualified and then enter a realm of further ongoing learning. Psychosexual Therapy certainly lays down that challenge. From the practice of theory, ethics and challenges presented in completing course hours, COSRT hours and then so many CPD’s. When I was studying, I went to as many as I could, eagerly going to British Association of Urological Nurses (BAUN), Prostate UK, Breast Cancer seminars, Testosterone study days, devices, toys, gels, and the ongoing working between physiological to psychological e ..read more

This article discusses delayed ejaculation in psychosexual therapy and Porn induced delayed ejaculation. Male delayed ejaculation (DE) is where ejaculation is possible, but with delay of perhaps 25‐30 minutes or more. The causes of DE are often psychogenic, but there are some cases of organic diseases (diabetes and drug side effects, etc). that cause anejaculation. This is the pathological inability to ejaculate in males, with (orgasmic) or without (anorgasmic) orgasm. Ejaculation and orgasm are two different systems that usually work together, but in fact are separate. E.g. a nocturnal emis ..read more
