For years, facility managers have shared anecdotal experiences and case studies demonstrating the ability of UVC for HVAC® systems to improve cooling capacity and reduce energy use. However, several recent studies have provided independent, third-party validation of the power of ultraviolet germicidal energy to boost HVAC system efficiency and slash energy costs.  Researchers from the National University of Singapore (NUS) and Pennsylvania State University (PSU) confirmed that UVC irradiation effectively cleans cooling coils in HVAC systems, reducing energy usage and costs while signifi ..read more

What is ASHRAE Standard 241? ASHRAE Standard 241, Control of Infectious Aerosols, is the first code-enforceable indoor air quality (IAQ) standard designed to reduce the indoor transmission of infectious aerosols. Drawing on research and expertise gathered from the ASHRAE Epidemic Task Force, the new standard provides requirements for many air system design, installation, operation, and maintenance aspects. In simplest terms, Standard 241 provides the minimum equivalent clean air requirements to reduce airborne diseases in commercial settings — such as offices, schools, and hospitals — and in r ..read more

Does UV-light generate ozone?
Steril-Aire Blog
by moxy
1y ago
Yes, UV light can generate ozone, but only under certain circumstances and wavelengths.  Ozone generation from UV light typically happens below 240nm by interrupting the bond of oxygen molecules causing two separate oxygen atoms.  These separate atoms then become attached to other naturally occurring oxygen molecules causing ozone or O3. It is important to know that within the vacuum UV or UVV level, between 100-200nm, that prime ozone generation will occur especially at the UV wavelength of 185nm, which is significantly lower than ALL Steril-Aire UVC products. Ster ..read more

In honor of UV Safety Month, which typically discusses topics such as sunscreen, sunglasses and sun hats, it is also vital to adhere to safety strategies when dealing with germicidal UVC emitters. Unlike sunlight and other bright lights, squinting or sunscreen doesn’t protect you from the after-effects of UVC exposure. Typically, not seen immediately, but UVC exposure can be seen hours later by “sunburn”, itchy/watery eyes or if extended, direct exposure can also cause temporary damage to the cornea.  Steril-Aire UVC is SAFE when the proper strategies are in place and followed as direc ..read more
