Differences In Online Mediation Mediating remotely is not only essential during the Covid-19 pandemic, but it also is a consideration for the future. The process we have outlined here allows you to do in the virtual world what you previously did face-to-face. Is it different? YES! But these differences include many benefits. Online mediation allows you to work with your participants in their own comfortable environment. The process feels less formal as it is not in a traditional setting such as an office or conference room. It fits extremely well with the informal system of self-help mediatio ..read more

I Got My Conflict Dynamics Profile Results. So What Happens Next? By Walt Hogan, Symbiosis President and Executive Coach It is clear that the research and data compiled to make the Conflict Dynamics Profile (CDP) a useful tool for identifying constructive behaviors, destructive behaviors and hot buttons has been supported with robust analysis and significant testing. However, receiving the CDP report without employing a professional executive coach who is a certified in the CDP interpretation can result in a meaningless effort toward conflict management development. As an executive coac ..read more

Author: Rebecca Armacost, Executive Director, Mediation Training Institute My four-year-old son Jackson started school this month. Up until now, he has been at home with either me or his nanny. So this transition is a big one for both of us! As I complete the never-ending To Do list of documents, signatures, supplies, and uniforms needed for the school, I’ve been reflecting on the lessons I’ve learned about conflict from this four-year-old.   While sometimes we want to cry and act out, conflict is resolved sooner when we talk through our perspectives. You can’t solve conflict if you don’t know what the problem is. Author: Patsy McLaughlin, MTI Master Trainer You can’t solve conflict if you don’t know what the problem is. So many times I have seen managers attempt to solve conflict in the workplace but make a few mistakes in their approach.  Typically, the first mistake is trying to solve the conflict by “telling” others what they need to do. For example, two managers are not agreeing on office space. The “boss” tells them to “be nice and work it out.”  Both are angry and blaming each other. One of the managers has asked some of ..read more

Incorporating Assessments in Mediation and Coaching Author: Michael Rawlings, lawyer, mediator, and coach A big part of our role as mediators is to assist people, teams, and organizations in some of their most trying times. Among the most challenging aspects of the practice is watching clients struggle through the complexities of relationships whether in the family or the workplace. Typically, they’ve done their best to manage conflict and resolve disputes on their own but either have hit a wall, run out of approaches, or gotten stuck. Then they come to us . The interest-based processes ..read more

Author: Terry Marschall, MTI Master Practitioner As a workplace mediator, MTI Master trainer, and avid people watcher, I find myself conscious of conflict in my daily surroundings. Recently, I was able to see the principles of mediation in ‘real time’, or as Dr. Dan Dana refers to as ‘on the line’ mediation, a way to prevent conflict before an actual event occurs. As a bit of background, I live and work from my boat much of the year. This week I am in North Bimini, Bahamas. Mother nature decided to kick up near gale force winds and high waves yesterday, forcing mariners of all vess ..read more

Hello Practitioners! It has been a year full of changes for Conflict Resolution and Mediation at Eckerd College. The first, and most notable change, is our name. We officially changed our name from the Center for Conflict Dynamics to the Mediation Training Institute (MTI). This new name aligns more with the strategic direction of the Executive Education department at Eckerd and is better for branding. Speaking of branding, have you seen our new websites? Both www.conflictdynamics.org and www.mediationworks.com have a new look. Both sites have a lot of practical information for you, are easier ..read more
