sale antCGi Biped Rigging Tool This week see’s a few updates to the antCGi store. First we have the release of bipRig, which was previously known as the antCGi Rigging Tool and was only available to YouTube channel members. As this moves out of BETA I have decided to offer it as an unrestricted, one time download to allow more people access to it. Not only this, but any funds generated from this tool will help further develop it and allow me time to work on version 2 which will be a fully modular rigging system. Don’t worry if you are a current channel supporter, you will still get monthly ac ..read more

I am thrilled to announce that starting next month, the highly popular biped rigging tool, or BipRig as I have rebranded it, will also be available on the antCGi store. This means that everyone who buys it will have full access to a restriction-free version, allowing for a comprehensive and unhindered rigging experience. For those who have been utilizing the restricted version provided to YouTube members and Ko-Fi donators, this transition marks a significant leap forward in functionality and accessibility. With the unrestricted version, users will have enhanced flexibility at their fingertip ..read more

Memberships Are Changing

As the popularity of my YouTube channel has grown i’ve been looking for ways to fund the creation of more courses. I’ve tried Patreon, Ko-Fi, selling scripts and tools and also advertising on my videos, but managing all of these became more time consuming than creating the content itself plus I want to keep as much of my content free, or as cheap as possible, so it can help more people. I finally settled on YouTube memberships which allow people to support the channel but I can also give them something in return on top of the free videos and courses. Originally I had two main tiers, the Suppo ..read more

Next year I want to focus my spare time on creating more free video content for you all, as well as developing the Rigging Toolkit, and its because of this I have come to the realization that I won’t be able to continue to develop the scripts included in my Maya Script Pack. As a reminder, this includes… Ribbon Creation Tool Auto Limb Tool Dynamic Joint Chain Tool Blendshape Rigging Tool IK <> FK Matching Tool Mirror Rig Tool Joint Arc Tool So with the help of the YouTube community I've decided, for now, to include the source .py scripts with the download and dramatic ..read more

I realise its been a while since I posted anything or uploaded a new video but don’t worry, I am still planning content to share with you all. Unfortunately the next couple of months are going to be quite busy for me so I am not sure if I will get time to create a new video for you, so instead I wanted to share this roadmap showing some of the courses I plan to start working on in the new year.     Now this doesn’t cover everything I want to do. There will also be some long overdue updates to my scripts and tools plus more CGTips videos too, for example, I want to create a video on ..read more

Store Data in Maya

I was recently approached by a client who wanted me to create a bespoke tool for them in Maya. This was a unique and complex task, the type I love, and as the scope of its development grew so did the need for even more flexibility. The client wanted the ability to add and remove elements at will, save the file, strip it down and then also regenerate everything should the need arise. The solution was to find a way to store key data in the scene, so it could be referenced later. This is quite a common question. Storing data can aid in a variety of ways ranging from simple user interface input t ..read more

Become a Better Artist

If you're reading this you're probably one of two types of people: 1. You may be looking to start sketching or want to get into digital painting but aren’t sure of how to go about it, or even where to begin. 2. Alternatively, you may be like I was a few years ago. I used to draw all the time, but once my career in game development began, my focus then shifted from pens and pencils to polygons and vertices and I rarely, if ever, picked up a pencil. Each year my new year’s resolution would be to draw more but I never really stuck to it, that was until a few years ago when I decided enough was en ..read more

Export and Import Weights

We have all been there. You’ve spent days painstakingly painting the weights on your character, ensuring the limbs bend and twist correctly and the face can emote without any strange bulges or pinches. You finally finish and the client requests a change to the rig. You are now faced with a possible reskin to a modified skeleton.  Not a problem, right? You can simply reference the old rig and model into the same scene as the new one and use the Copy Skin Weights tool to transfer the weights across. Problem is some of the joints are too close together so copying the weights doesn’t work co ..read more

Create a Pick-Walk Hierarchy
antCGi Blog

The best rigs are the ones which are intuitive and simple to use. When building them you must remember that it’s possible it will be used by a whole team of animators, all of which will have their preferred approach to bringing things to life. Overload a rig with too many controls and you’re not only making it more complicated to use but you’re adding to the amount of time it takes an animator to create the simplest of sequences. One element of rigging which can help is to build in the ability to pick-walk through the hierarchy. This allows the animator to quickly navigate the rig by using the ..read more
