(Incident occurred on Wednesday, April 24th, 2024 at 6:00 AM) Fire engines from the city and county responded to a commercial structure fire at Constitution and E. Bellevue Road. Upon arrival, the fire department discovered a fire outside one of the multi-structure buildings, which appeared to extend inside. Firefighters were able to knock out the fire before it extended to the other buildings, According to Cal Fire Atwater Battalion Chief Bobby Ayuso. Plans to continue construction are still underway at the former Sears building. In a recent phone interview with a Merced City Official, the former Sears building has new owners, which resulted in adjusting different plans than the previous owners originally had. Construction should have started by now, but thieves stole a large power panel from the site, which delayed construction for months. Man accused of intentionally striking man with vehicle in Atwater

(Incident occurred on Sunday, April 16, 2024 at 4:30 p.m.) The Atwater Police Department responded to a disturbance call at the 2400 block of Palm Avenue. Officers responded near the area and found a Blue Toyota that had struck a tree on Fortuna Avenue. As officers approached the vehicle, officers saw a male subject run from the scene. The officers pursued the man on foot and ultimately apprehended him. Shortly after the incident, officers located an injured adult male near the crashed vehicle. (Incident occured on Monday, April 15, 2024 at 4:50 p.m.) A 5-year-old child was struck by a truck on Crest Road near Muir Avenue in Atwater, according to Atwater Police Chief Michael Salvador. The incident is under investigation, but Salvador said the driver stayed on the scene, and the 5-year-old was airlifted to an unknown hospital. The driver of the truck was not under the influence, according to Salvador. The Barnes & Noble bookstore located at 1720 Olive Avenue in Merced is scheduled to close on May 12, 2024, according to a representative of Barnes & Noble. The closing is due to a lease agreement issue between the property owner and Barnes and Noble, similar to what Merced’s Best Buy went through in 2020. Although Barnes & Noble will close its current location, the bookstore will not permanently close, as the company is seeking other locations in Merced. Four juveniles sustained injuries after a single-vehicle rollover on Highway 140 in Merced County. According to Merced CHP, officers responded to Highway 140 near Sultana for a vehicle rollover at 1:39 p.m. The preliminary investigation determined a driver, 18, was driving at an undetermined speed on westbound Highway 140 when he lost control of the vehicle, which rolled over and landed on its side. The Atwater City Planning Commission has approved the development to construct a new Dutch Bros Coffee near the intersection of Bellevue Road and Linden Street in Atwater. Merced CHP responded to a vehicle vs. bicyclist accident on Cressey Way near Almond Avenue at 4:56 p.m. According to the California Highway Patrol, a van and the bicyclist were traveling westbound on Cressey Way when the van hit the bicyclist. The bicyclist, an adult male, suffered significant injuries and was transported to a hospital outside the area. The driver of the van is currently cooperating with the authorities. Merced Police responded to a shots fired call on Denver Way and Frankfort Ct. at 5:06 a.m. According to police, officers were directed to a male gun shot victim near the area. The male was unresponsive, and officers tried life-saving measures. However, the gunshot victim died on the scene. Shortly after locating the first gunshot victim, another gunshot victim was found near the area. He was transported to a local hospital, police say. Currently, no further information is available. Detectives from the Merced County Sheriff’s Department are investigating a carjacking incident involving an Amazon delivery vehicle. According to Merced County Sheriff Deputy Michael Domingue, the incident occurred mid-afternoon at the 9000 block of N. Buhach Road in Winton on January 22, 2024. The suspect, only described as a male, brandished a firearm at the driver before stealing the vehicle. The victim was not harmed during the incident.
