It was nearly 1 year ago that unsafe features were assessed and removed from Mary Jane, Flow Show, and The Simple Life. Let’s preface this by saying: feature removal is not something anyone at the NMBC enjoys doing, especially because we enjoy riding the features too. That said, many of the features removed were rotten and structurally compromised, while others were simply poorly constructed and not up to the safety standards required by landowners. All of this comes down to safety and fulfilling our duty of care to prevent hospital visits resulting from compromised and unsafe structures. Wh ..read more

Fine China, Nanaimo’s first machine-built flow trail, will be undergoing its first official refresh since its construction in 2013. A significant update has been scheduled for some time, but after recent harvesting activities forced the popular trail to close, the project was expedited to the top of the list.
With funding from Rec Sites & Trails BC, the NMBC has hired two of the original builders: Mason McGarrigle and Bill McLean to complete the work in a one-month timeframe; between March 1st and April 5, 2021.
The work will begin on Upper Fine China, and progress to Lower F ..read more

Day 4 of this year’s BC Bike Race will be held in Nanaimo. After two years of racing in BC’s interior, the 7-day mountain bike stage race will return to it’s Island roots for a week in July.
The Nanaimo stage’s course designer is none other than our NMBC trail director Ryan Smith, who’s worked on BCBR Bike Patrol for 8 years. Ryan has big plans and wants to make sure the Nanaimo stage will be one to remember.
Head over to the BCBR website for additional details and to register for the race.

Time is drawing to an end for the NMBC’s first ever paid trail crew program
Here’s an update on everything that was accomplished over the past few months:
Doumont
Part of the vision that prescribed the work in Doumont was to create a corridor on the south side of Weigles Rd to compliment the corridor on the north.
The majority of days were spent in Doumont, building a new climbing trail to bypass the deteriorating road known as Killer Climb.

Our Winter Trail Crew has been hard at work since the end of November and has made solid progress over the first 5 weeks. Our crew consists of 9 individuals and started with experience ranging from established builders to just learning the trade. December saw us getting the crew getting trained up on trailbuilding methods and applying these skills to two reroutes at Doumont to meet the NMBC’s maintenance commitments and improve upon the user experience of the network.
We began by rerouting the hike-a- bike section of Banshee Blvd, near Killer Climb, with an approximate 200 m new seg ..read more
