Millions of costumes are sold every year for World Book Day, which is just one of the ‘dress up’ days that kids have at school nowadays. Many of these mass-produced costumes are made of low quality materials – often plastic based, are made with dubious ethics and many are discarded after being used once. Costumes are therefore, a HUGE environmental problem, adding to our textile waste with over 7 million halloween costumes alone being thrown in the bin each year.
Many fun costume can be created with things from around the house with a little creativity and ingenuity. Here are some of the ones ..read more

Most of us have things in our wardrobe that need repairing or refitting, be that a button sewing on, a hole to fix or trousers taking up. It is likely these have been unworn for some time as you haven’t got round to doing it and a lot of people throw them out rather than doing something about it. But repairing these things not only saves us money, but also the planet as we won’t be buying new which uses up precious resources and energy. It can also bring a beloved item back into use or can revamp something we didn’t like before.

Clothing patches are a quick and easy way to repair kids clothes, covering holes and stains or even to liven up and old garment. Iron-on versions make it very simple but sewing them on will make them more durable. I take a look at some of the best ones around to save you time.
My advice is to choose iron-on patches and then once they are affixed you can sew around the edge to make them really durable. The glue on the back of an iron-on patch will also help to hold together any rip or hole you are trying to cover.

On Monday we hosted a zoom panel discussion about sustainability in kids fashion with special guests Jeroo Doodhmal; founder of Pip and Henry, Tze Ching Yeung; founder of Refashion My Town, Kat Vandal; founder of Vandal Kids and Rachel Kan; founder of the Ecosystem Incubator.
Despite the technical difficulties at the start with the zoom link not working through Eventbrite it was a good event and brilliant to have the panelists input and insights on the subject.
