Farabuto at KCL Fashion Society's Annual Fashion Show [from Italian "Farabutto"], is a word used in the Adriatic to describe a charming little rascal who is not too big on the rules and is often terribly late, but somehow always steals your heart. Head designer Bruno Dippong of Farabuto and I spoke on how the brand captures life living on the coast in Croatia. Dippong described the garments as “organic and comfortable” in order to stray away from being too sophisticated. The collection grounded the brand and its aims to retain a personal touch were beautifully portrayed. It was extremely re ..read more

The Sinfrey Collection: The Intersection of Fashion, Art, and Queer Identity
The Strand Magazine
by Megan Shears & Roxy-Moon Dahal Hodson

The Sinfrey Collection at KCL Fashion Society's Annual Fashion Show The Sinfrey Collection was an explosion of performative art engaged with the experience of those who came to the show. Offa Sinfrey reflected on how they embedded concepts of their drag persona by gender-bending pink and blue through "Anyone to Another," in a celebration of openness and relatibility. The Sinfrey Collection reflects Offa “growing up with the queer existence” and pulls the thread on binary, unveiling what is assumed. Passing the flowers from each model until it's handed to Offa at the end of the show signifies ..read more

Album Review: Vampire Weekend’s Only God Was Above Us (2024) Finds Peace In the Bleak and Dire

Photo by Ralph_PH via Flickr (licensed under CC BY-2.0 DEED) When it comes to shaping the sound of indie rock today, Vampire Weekend’s influence is incomparable. Founded in 2006, the collective has redefined what the genre can be with their innovative blends of Afro-Pop, West Indian palettes, orchestral music and punk, alongside catchy guitar riffs and topical tongue-in-cheek lyricism. Their reception has been polarising, with sunny, overly joyous tracks about the ‘oxford comma’ and college romances becoming their main breakout hits. Equally, a veil of Ivy League boy pretentiousne ..read more

Scarlett at KCL Fashion Society's Annual Fashion Show Scarlett, another first-time designer, studied a foundation year in design before enrolling at King’s College London. Wearing vintage herself that night, Scarlett presents the old and new to create memorable and classic garments. Scarlett blends plentiful designs from prior studies and explains to me how the collection is unnamed. When speaking with other designers, many of them have cohesive themes and concepts which are clearly conveyed. However, the wide spectrum of styles allowed each distinctive look to be brought forth, never one ov ..read more

Woven Creativity: Exploring Vertiginous .02

Vertiginous .02 at KCL Fashion Society's Annual Fashion Show At the beginning of the show, I was immediately drawn to a group of individuals sitting directly opposite me. With a palpable enthusiasm for the show and dressed with designs blanketed in colour, I was certain they were involved in the fashion industry. I discovered from their loud cheers in the crowd of fashion goers, how they were the family of Gemma Merricks of rricks wearing pieces made by her. The brand titled their new collection ‘vertiginous. 02' elevating upon their first collection ‘foundations .01.’ The collection in ..read more

King's College London’s Fashion Society titles their charity fashion show ‘Artisanal Reverie’ centring upcoming designers and their various evocative visions. The team at Strand Magazine stuck together, snacking and watching the designers craft their looks for the walk-through. We gave commentary on the various happenings whilst retaining an air of distance, not wanting to intrude or induce stress. Models planned their walks, designers unpacked and adjusted their garments, and the air around was fizzing with chaos characterised by an effort to impress and deliver. Feeling the urgency clamour a ..read more

Lindsey Lomis meets Lizzy McAlpine: Sophia James and her Clockwork EP

Photo available via Flickr (Under License Attribution-NonCommercial-NoDerivs (CC BY-NC-ND 2.0)) I love discovering new artists, and from my recollection, it was Instagram reels that presented me with the punchy, synth heavy dance number that is ‘Circadian Rhythm’. This ridiculously catchy single instantly grabbed my attention, and I started down a rabbit hole of artist exploration.  Now on her 3rd studio EP, Sophia James’ Clockwork EP is a reflection on time, and the way it is “linear, circular, orderly, chaotic, real, fake, overflowing, running out, everything, and nothing at al ..read more

Four Steps for Comprehending
The Strand Magazine
by Carrie Smith

[Contains Sensitive Content] by Carrie Smith   First - the daze. You wake up at eleven AM, eyes dry, mouth dry, head sore. The patch of sun on your pink duvet makes you blink.   Second - the tightening. Your neck feels delicate and strange. With that sudden awareness comes a claustrophobic flashback. You count the memories of drinks until you can’t remember anymore. You think, “there must have been more.”   Third - the heaviness. A hand, your neck, your hair pulled taut. Someone else’s breath on your face. “This is a movie,” you think. Last night is veiled with intoxication a ..read more

Reviewing 'Legally Blonde' by KMTS: "If there ever was a perfect musical, this one qualifies!"
The Strand Magazine
by Dan Ramos Lay

The King’s Musical Theatre Society’s run of Legally Blonde, directed by Bea Watts and produced by Zelenie Luk , opened last week at the Greenwood Theatre. Not only do I think that it is a stunning adaptation of the iconic musical, but I genuinely think that it is a prime example of the pristine level of talent that we have at this university. I have adored the Legally Blonde musical (which I listened to before I’d even watched the 2001 film it was based on, for some inexplicable reason) for many years, so when I found out it was the KMT’s second semester pick I was understandably ecstati ..read more
