The Red Sox went 4-2 on their second road trip of the year, sweeping the Pirates in Pittsburgh and avoiding getting swept by the Guardians in Cleveland.
After their first homestand culminated in a blemished 3-7 mark to begin the Fenway season, it was a much-needed palate cleanser.
But the trip ended on a period rather than an exclamation point; the Sox lost Thursday’s series finale 6-4, taking some of the wind out of their sails before their return to Boston.
Making his first start of the year in place of the injured Brayan Bello, Chase Anderson escaped a jam in the first inning, but couldn’t ..read more

The Miami Heat’s scintillating showing from 3-point range was the primary reason the Celtics were upset in Game 2 of their first-round playoff series.
But it didn’t help that one of Boston’s most important players turned in the worst performance of his C’s tenure.
Center Kristaps Porzingis was a nonfactor in Wednesday night’s 111-101 loss at TD Garden, scoring just six points on 1-of-9 shooting against Miami’s physical and aggressive defense. His 11.1% field-goal percentage was by far his lowest of the season. Porzingis also missed all four of his 3-point attempts after going 4-for-8 from deep ..read more

Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce’s love story featured some fan favorite characters last week as the stars went on a double date with Swift’s longtime pal Gigi Hadid and Bradley Cooper.
Donna Kelce, mom of the 34-year-old Kansas City Chiefs tight end, said Wednesday at QVC’s Age of Possibility summit in Las Vegas that the Super Bowl champ sent her a snap from the foursome’s beach day in Carmel-by-the-Sea, California, People reports.
It was during their time down the shore that Kelce realized Cooper, 49, would be in attendance at the event to serve lunch to the 50 w ..read more

TORONTO—The Bruins entered this playoff season with the belief that the goaltending is the strength of their team. And in the first round, they haven’t been wrong about that.
And yet, all of a sudden, the goalie rotation question is back on the table.
That is not to say that Linus Ullmark was bad in Game 2, a 3-2 loss to the Toronto Maple Leafs at the Garden. Far from it. He faced 10 high danger chances, according to Natural Stat Trick, and made a number of Grade A saves to keep the B’s in a game in which they did not play very well.
But then there’s Jeremy Swayman’s 5-0 record against the Lea ..read more

NEW ORLEANS (AP) — The man who fatally shot retired NFL star Will Smith during a confrontation following a car crash in 2016 received a 25-year prison sentence Thursday in a New Orleans courtroom.
It was the second time Cardell Hayes, 36, had faced sentencing in Smith’s death. He was convicted of manslaughter in December 2016 and later sentenced to 25 years. But the jury vote had been 10-2 and the conviction was later tossed after the U.S. Supreme Court outlawed such non-unanimous verdicts. After a new trial, Hayes was convicted by a unanimous jury in January ..read more

Remember five months ago?
That frigid time in late November and early December, when we kept warm by debating whether the Patriots should start Mac Jones or Bailey Zappe. As if that was anything more than picking between a half-eaten bag of chips or bad fruit for lunch?
As if it mattered?
Now just in case you just emerged from hibernation, Jones was benched three times in 10 games and still managed to hold onto his job. The Patriots finished 4-13, and quarterback was the No. 1 reason why.
For all the days we’ve since spent brainstorming every fake trade and prospect the Patriots might pick at ..read more

Will this be Maye Day?
Or just another “mayday!”
The smart money says the Patriots are going to take North Carolina QB Drake Maye with the No. 3 pick in the NFL Draft tonight.
DraftKings has Maye at -330 to go third.
Will the Patriots be making that selection?
The smart money says that is more probable than not.
A brand-new red, white and blue dawn breaks in Foxboro. For the first time in 25 years, the Patriots participate in an NFL Draft without Bill Belichick.
The team, at least as of press time, holds its highest draft pick since Bill Parcells picked up Drew Bledsoe while shopping at Market ..read more

For months, the Patriots have been expected to stick at No. 3 overall and take a quarterback in the first round of the 2024 NFL Draft.
That’s still the most likely scenario.
But let’s not entirely rule out a curveball as the draft approaches.
