Glendale City Council unanimously voted Tuesday night to strike down a June contract amendment with the owner of VAI Resort, instead of putting the decision to a referendum. The council's decision essentially leads to the same result a "no" vote in the referendum would have had. The vote was never about whether the project will move forward, but, rather, an amended contract with VAI. A red-light runner reportedly caused a crash that sent a Valley Metro bus through a backyard wall and into a home in Glendale Tuesday night. Police say the crash occurred near 67th and Peoria avenues when a sedan went through a red light and collided with a city bus. The collision caused the bus driver to lose control and crash into a property on the south side of the intersection. Crews battled a third-alarm fire with hazmat near 59th and Glendale avenues Saturday afternoon. Glendale fire officials say the fire was at a plastic recycling yard. The fire department originally received a call about an unknown fire at about 6:05 p.m. When crews were on the way, they learned that it was a semi-truck and trailer on fire with exposure to a building. Its the first week for Great Hearts Glendale Academys newest faculty member. Her name is Mabel and shes a 1-year-old Bernidoodle. Mabel works as the campus's full-time therapy dog. The school is bringing her on staff in hopes of relieving the social anxiety and depression students have shown since returning to campus following the COVID pandemic. A 32-year-old man was arrested for allegedly stealing a service dog from a hotel and participating in an organized retail theft ring. Court paperwork says the man was caught while Glendale police were investigating a group of people involved in several shoplifting incidents in the city. A man has been arrested, accused of stealing nearly 100 pairs of Nike shoes throughout 14 robberies at three Valley Nike stores in recent months. According to police paperwork, Dequayl Montgomery-Terrell is accused of entering the Nike stores at Tanger Outlets, Desert Ridge Marketplace, and on the Gila River Indian Community on at least 14 occasions.
