Sharon Brous—a leading American rabbi—makes the case that the spiritual work of our time, as instinctual as it is counter-cultural, is to find our way to one other in celebration, in sorrow, and in solidarity. How Brokenness Manifests Wholeness

by Melanie Gruenwald   The other day, my husband, Salomon, asked me to pick up some new drinking glasses for our kitchen. Somehow our collection from the past 22 years of marriage has diminished due to lots of “oops moments,” and my 16- year-old son’s habit of hoarding glasses in his bedroom.   I bought a set of six glasses from Target, and we started loading them in the dishwasher together before we put them to use. As Salomon created space on the top shelf by moving other items around, I loaded the glasses, like pieces in a puzzle, so we could fit all of the glasses in our almost-f ..read more

by Dr. David Sanders “Every day I think about what you said to me that day on the bridge. I tried to live my life the best that I could. I hope that was enough. I hope that, at least in your eyes, I’ve earned what all of you have done for me.”   These are the words James Ryan speaks while visiting the grave of Captain Miller in the film, Saving Private Ryan. Ryan’s two older brothers had already died serving the United States in their fight against the Nazis. The army assigns soldiers under the command of Captain Miller to find and secure the safe return of Private Ryan so that a mother ..read more

by Dr. David Sanders The world I knew, the one I counted on, turned upside down in the aftermath of the genocidal attack on Jews who were residents or just visiting near the Israel-Gaza border on Saturday, 7 October.   My older sister, who lives in Israel, told me the next day that it was already circulating that the devastation was far greater than first reported. Over the ensuing days the numbers of known dead increased and the number of those taken hostage grew. The details of the atrocities were revealed. I imagined I was there on one of the Kibbutzim, huddling and hiding, trying to p ..read more

The Sages taught: On the day that Adam the first man was created, when the sun set upon him he said: Woe is me, as because I sinned, the world is becoming dark around me, and the world will return to the primordial state of chaos and disorder. And this is the death that was sentenced upon me from Heaven. He spent all night fasting and crying, and Eve was crying opposite him. Once dawn broke, he said: Evidently, the sun sets and night arrives, and this is the order of the world. ~ Avodah Zara 8a The William Davidson Talmud (Koren – Steinsaltz), sefaria.org This is the order of the world. by Dr. David Sanders For these things do I weep, My eyes, my eyes, flow with tears Far from me is any comforter Who might revive my spirit My children are forlorn, For the foe has prevailed.   This lamentation I have read privately and publicly so many times to the haunting tune of the ancient book called: How? How could this happen? How did this happen?   As a relief from my heartache, my tears, my disbelief, my helplessness, my rage, are the stories of heroism; a young woman named Inbal who rallied her Kibbutz’s make-shift security forces to thwart and kill an incoming horde of ter ..read more

by Melanie Gruenwald This semester, I am teaching the Base Awareness and Kabbalah of Mitch Albom classes for Kabbalah Experience. I always love to see how classes overlap. (Paying attention to what’s showing up definitely helps inspire blog posts!!)   In Base Awareness, we’re working our way up the tree of life- starting with Malchut. Our awareness practice for Malchut reminds us to: Attend to what shows up as a reflection of what you need to learn and grow into.   During today’s Kabbalah of Mitch Albom class, we discussed the first two people Eddie meets in Heaven (from the five peo ..read more
