Hello Everyone, Today I bring you all things joyful. I do, however, want to thank you from the bottom of my heart for all the kind and sympathetic comments on my last post. Sometimes the internet can be a vehicle for good. You really comforted me. But now let’s talk about hats and upcoming plans to leave the house. This is Scrappy Charlotte. I have had a few people ask to bring her back. Well, she’s back. I’m sorry that it took me two years (or more) to fulfill that request. I do hope that whoever made the request is still with me. I don’t think I intentionally try to have a style. I’m actua ..read more

This morning I walked the Back Harbour Trail with my sweet puppy. Well, I walked and he frolicked, unencumbered by his tired almost 14 year old body. As is his pleasure, he blazed the path, darting in and out of the woods, picking up as much mud as possible to proudly wear on his white legs and to eventually shake off in the living room. Every once in a while he would look back at me to make sure I was still there and then off he would go. We did the long walk, all the way to the fish plant, through the woods and back to town. It’s been so long since we took that route. In his last months her ..read more

Introducing Betty Bucket

You can find Betty Bucket Here This is not your daughter’s bucket hat. That was the line that popped into my head when I stepped back to admire my new design. Not sure if my free form association translates outside the parameters of my own mind, so I’ll elaborate. I’m constantly seeing the line, “The is not your grandmother’s (insert noun here). And what, pray tell, is wrong with your grandmother’s (insert noun here)? The way I see it, Grandma had style and was not afraid to show it. Grandma had undervalued talents and grandma deserves respect for her unabashed love of beauty and her skills in ..read more

Knit One, Cry Two

Cast on 78 stitches, knit one with main colour, listen to the news, cry, purl one main colour, twist contrast colour around main colour, try to make sense of the horror, knit 2 rounds plain, rage, knit one, purl one to the end of round….cry a little more. Another beautiful beret is completed. This is where I have been for the past two months. Thankfully, I have this outlet of making beautiful textiles. My hands know to add beauty to the world even when my heart can’t feel it. If your hands also need to keep moving and you are looking for a quick gift knit or would just like to knit yourself ..read more

Seizing the Day

Hi, everyone! Welcome to October. Fall in Lunenburg is proving to be much kinder than the summer. OK, there was one little hurricane, but I’m so over natural disasters…or any other kind, for that matter. I have forgotten it as quickly as it blew in. A few weeks back my friend/neighbour, Vanessa, and I decided to seize the day. We got on our bikes and headed to a secret beach. I would tell you where this is, but I’m afraid I would have to kill you. Vanessa took the above photo. I really can’t get over the colours. It simply has to become a sweater…or a felt hat. I’m always amazed at how happy ..read more

Hello, from pretty Lunenburg. As you can see from the above photo, I am open for business. I mustered up everything I learned about painting in Kindergarten and made an open sign. People often look confused when standing in my driveway trying to decide if they are in the right place or not. Hopefully, this little arrow will help. I realize there is quite a lot to look at in the first photo…my handmade skirt, sweater, socks, the paint falling off my house. But what I really want you to look at is the hat (no surprise there). I just made this one a couple of days ago. Her name is Audrey, as in ..read more

Spring Has Sprung

Hello, hello, I just wanted to pop in here to let people know that Spring returned. Isn’t it amazing? How do those buds know to open? I was just beginning to feel forsaken by Mother Nature when the crocuses and daffodils started appearing. In Nova Scotia, one never fully puts their winter clothes away, but I have definitely pulled the Spring clothes out. (These caps can be found HERE.) As you can see, I have been busy making canvas caps. I started making this style at the beginning of the pandemic ( sorry to bring that word in here). I found caps easier to wear with masks, but I also discove ..read more

Sal in her green beret I just finished teaching my first 4 week hand knit and felted beret workshop. For the past four Monday mornings four delightful ladies have shown up at my house to learn to make a hand knit and felted beret. The first of anything always comes with a bit of trepidation…Can I fit this into four mornings? Can I teach knitters who are at different levels? Will they enjoy themselves? Will everyone walk away with a hat they love? Well, the answer to all these questions turned out to be, Yes! Yes, Nancy is always this happy I was so relieved that all four ladies felt like my co ..read more

My Quest to Slow Down Time and lots of Slow Hats

Natural dyeing, Photo by Anne Weeks Hello, hello. It’s been so long since I have had the time to properly chat with you. Time has a way of getting away from us, doesn’t it? I have been digging my heels in the ground, valiantly trying to slow the world down, but I guess it’s true what they say…time waits for no one. I suppose, if I’m being honest with myself, my obsession with all things slow has something to do with this… Dustin, Celeste and Lego Do you recognize that little boy? That’s Dustin, once known as Dusty, with his girlfriend, Celeste. Between them is my 12 year old puppy, Lego. There ..read more
