According to Dr Krithiga Shridhar, Centre for Environmental Health at PHFI and the lead scientist of the study, the findings possibly highlight a modifiable risk factor for gallbladder cancer. “The study may address the Jal Jeevan Mission-2024, which is completely aligned with Sustainable Development Goals for equitable, clean, and safe drinking water,” Dr Shridhar said.

“The study assessed arsenic exposure of the study participants based on their residential history since childhood and the average concentration of groundwater arsenic at district-level. “Obtaining long-term residential history since childhood with information on potential sources of drinking water, is an important contribution of this study to the existing evidence base. Air pollution causes and exacerbates a number of diseases, ranging from asthma to pulmonary illnesses and heart disease. In accordance with recent estimates by the World Health Organization, exposure to air pollution is thus a more important risk factor for major noncommunicable diseases than previously thought. Air pollution is the largest contributor to the burden of disease from the environment. The impact of air pollution on human health is of growing concern as research unravels more links between several serious diseases among various age groups and air pollution.

On 4th June 2021, National Programme on Climate Change and Human Health (NPCCHH), Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoHFW), Government of India organised a webinar titled ‘Ecosystem Restoration: Role of Health Sector‘ , in observance of the World Environment Day 2021.
