If you have been following the Spinsters of Horror since our inception in 2018, you will know that my co-host/close friend Kelly has been broadening my horizons in the horror genre in various ways. This first started with ,“Let’s Scare Jessica To Death '' which was a monthly challenge in which Kelly would select a film she knew would make for a difficult viewing experience. The films would be shocking, weird, macabre or downright disturbing. These challenges forced me to explore other films of the genre that were not ..read more

Spoiler Free Review by Kelly
I first encountered the crew from Monster Makeup Productions with their deliciously campy and bloody film, Death Drop Gorgeous (2020). Here at the Spinsters of Horror, we do our best to support all corners of the horror world, and as members of the LGBTQIA+ community, queer horror and PRIDE holds a special place for us. So in June of 2022, we hosted a Twitch fundraiser screening of DDG with some of the cast and crew on hand to provide insightful (and hilarious) commentary throughout the movie. It was an absolute blast and we fell in love with them. We also discover ..read more

In this episode, we are officially covering our first two films of our broadened cinematic scope on the podcast and venturing into the taboo subject of necrophilia. But we are being DOUBLY subversive and talking specifically about female necrophilia and its representation in two similar but very different films - the Canadian independent film Kissed from 1996 and the German cult classic Nekromantik 2 from 1991.

Post by Jessica Parant
The 2016 film Lady Macbeth, though not strictly a horror film but a British drama directed by William Oldroyd, is based loosely on the novella by Nikolai Leskvo called Lady Macbeth of the Mtsensk District. While both the story and film look at the themes of the subordinate role placed upon women in European society and adultery, it also addresses themes that are often presented in horror films through the lens of the monstrous feminine. Lady Macbeth deals with the idea of a woman turned monstrous from the lack of agency denied to her by a society that views her as first ..read more

When Kelly came up with the idea of “Let’s Scare Jessica to Death” in 2018, I was still green around the ears in regards to the more “intense” horror films. It became a way in which Kelly could introduce me to various subgenres of horror, as well as challenge me to watch films that I would never select on my own. I have honestly grown to love “Let’s Scare Jessica To Death”, as it has allowed me to leave my comfort zone and make some surprising discoveries about what type of films I enjoy and ones I actually gravitate towards. It has also shown me the movies that I just need to stay away from ..read more
