  It is with the greatest sadness that we announce that Dr. Virginia Livolsi, Professor of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine, has passed away.  Dr. LiVolsi was a unique and dearly beloved colleague, friend and mentor.   We don’t believe that anyone practicing medicine can mention the word “thyroid” without thinking of Dr. LiVolsi and this will still be true for many years to come. Enrique Olguín-Martínez, PhD, a postdoctoral fellow in the Henao-Mejia lab, has been named a 2023 Pew Latin American Fellow in the Biomedical Sciences. His research will explore the correlation between stress and nutrition, specifically how diet-induced inflammation promotes childhood obesity. Dr. Malek Kamoun, Professor and Director of HUP’s Clinical Immunology and HLA Immunogenetics Laboratory, and Dr. Ryan Urbanowicz of Cedars-Sinai Medical Center are working to develop machine learning/AI strategies to improve kidney matching and decrease the likelihood of graft failure in recipients.
