Ubi cáritas et amor, Deus ibi est (Gregorian Chant) | Holy Thursday
James Flores Blog

The “Ubi Caritas” chant, often sung during Holy Thursday, is a message of love and charity. The text, which translates to “Where charity and love are, God is there,” reflects the core Christian belief in love as the foundational presence of God among His people. Holy Thursday commemorates the Last Supper, where Jesus washed the feet of his disciples in an act of humility and service, commanding them to love one another as He loved them. Many thanks to Ben, Zach and Michael for recording this prior to Holy Thursday during our rehearsal. Score: https://archive.ccwatershed.org/media/pdfs/13/12/2 ..read more

I had the opportunity to play the Wollongong Town Hall organ this week! This organ was built by Ron Sharp who is an Australian organ builder who famously also built the Sydney Opera House organ. I hope you enjoy my piece of Denis Bédard which gives an opportunity to explore the tonal resources of this fine instrument. ROYAL MARCH IN A-FLAT – PHIL LEHENBAUER

This march or trumpet tune has a distinct air of regality, making it suitable for any ceremonial occasion. You could use it as a prelude, postlude, wedding recessional, or procession requiring formal grandeur! Phil writes this in a way to showcase a solo reed if the organ has it. I recored this on the Casavant, opus 3742 (1995), Bellevue, Washington organ model by Sonus Paradisi using Hauptwerk. Virtual Vespers – 13 March 2024 | Organ music with prayers and readings
James Flores Blog

The Vespers prayer service has its origins in the ancient Jewish tradition of reciting prayers at set times throughout the day. In the Christian context, Vespers evolved from the practice of evening prayer in the monastic communities of the early Church. By the Middle Ages, the Vespers service had become a staple of the Roman Catholic liturgy, consisting of psalms, hymns, and readings from scripture. The service typically takes place at sunset and is meant to mark the end of the day and prepare for rest and contemplation. “Virtual Vespers” is a meditative evening service with organ music on t ..read more

Suite pour orgue – Denis Bédard

This suite was dedicated to Bédard’s wife, Rachel Alfatt, and is an original composition comprising three movements. The Prelude is very stately, majestic and full of colour. The Lamento is a movement of yearning with two solo voices whilst the Toccata is very much a display of the organist’s technical ability. The suite is Bédard’s typical blending of traditional organ writing with more modern elements, creating music that is both artistically rich and accessible. I recorded this on the mighty sample set of Rotterdam using Hauptwerk, sampled by Sonus Paradisi. Prélude | 0:00 Lamento | 4:45 T ..read more

Prelude and Fugue in E-flat major, BWV 552 – Johann Sebastian Bach

Over a year ago I recorded the E-flat Prelude and Fugue separately, and on different sample sets (Rotterdam Transept and Hereford Cathedral). I decided to combine them into one complete video. It’s quite surprising to hear that the sample sets sounded quite in tune with each other, although Hereford was much “smoother” given the English nature of the instrument. Hopefully one day I’ll work up this monumental work again and record it on one very lucky sample. I hope you enjoy my performance of the complete “St Anne” Prelude and Fugue by Bach.
