A years-long construction project for the Navy of a new aircraft paint complex was completed in April and celebrated with a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Naval Base Coronado. The 51,785-square-foot standalone paint and corrosion control facility, located on Naval Air Station North Island, cost $74 million.  Naval Facilities Engineering Systems Command Southwest, along with its contracted partner, RQ-DPR Joint Venture, and leadership from Fleet Readiness Centers (FRC), started the project on March 31, 2020. The City of Coronado is launching its Recreation and Golf Services Summer 2024 brochure, which details a wide range of activities, classes, and camps for residents and nonresidents to enjoy during the summer months. The City says the brochure is now live and Coronado residents can begin registering on May 8 at 9 a.m., while nonresidents will get the opportunity to register on May 22 at 9 a.m. From arts and cooking to STEAM, sports, and surf camps, the City announcement says there are plenty of opportunities to get involved and enjoy the summer sun. The Coronado High School Track and Field team participated in their last City League meet on April 18. The Islanders’ last 2024 season meet took place at Crawford High School and competition featured Christian High School and the host school’s teams. The Tijuana River, or ‘Rio Tijuana’ in Spanish, was named ninth on the list of America’s Most Endangered Rivers by an environmental advocacy organization called American Rivers. The girls on the Coronado High School track team have outdone themselves with their incredible performance ‘where the world’s best athletes compete’— the 64th annual Mt. SAC Relays. In a last-minute addition to the girls’ seeded 4×100 relay event, four CHS sprinters traveled to Walnut, California, where they not only competed but won their heat with a City League leading time of 48.83 seconds.
