Take me out for a taco, take me out to the roof of… Taco District
Peekskill Herald

I’m 9 years removed from Brooklyn and, as my son will tell you, I have never been cool, but stepping into Taco District at 20 North Division Street made me feel like I was transported to the hippest new spot in Bushwick. I may be an unreliable source, but the care that Dina and Hever Palacios have put into their vision is undeniable and the result is a cozy, airy, family-run dining establishment to celebrate.  When Hever and Dina Palacios took over Iron Vine Tapas Bar on Main Street three years ago, they carried on the tradition of owner Gabriel Arango to source everything in the restaura ..read more

Local Peekskill resident Tom Hunt brings history to life at Fort Montgomery State Park
Peekskill Herald
by Dave Mueller

Fort Montgomery, just on the other side of the Bear Mountain Bridge, was the scene of a fierce Revolutionary War battle for control of the Hudson River. Visitors today can tour the remains of the 14-acre fortification, perched on a cliff overlooking the magnificent Hudson. On October 6, 1777, British, Loyalist and Hessian forces attacked Fort Montgomery and nearby Fort Clinton. The defending American Patriots, outnumbered 3 to 1, fought desperately until driven out of their forts at the points of the enemy bayonets. More than half of the Patriot forces were killed, wounded or captured. The New ..read more

Peekskill Herald

Peekskill city officials faced a quandary this month dealing with a problem in need of a solution where no easy options exist. They are not alone. Cities and towns all across the nation face the some dilemma. In fact, the United States Supreme Court held two and a half hours of contentious oral arguments Monday in Washington D.C. on the same issue – what can cities do to help homeless individuals while preserving the health and well being of the residents of the city. In Peekskill, several people have been living in a makeshift shelter on the cliff overlooking McGregory Brook along Central Ave ..read more

To the editor: Last Thursday, Holtec International, the company who received $2.4B of your ratepayer money to decommission Indian Point, sued the State of New York for the “Save the Hudson” bill that prohibited the dumping of 1.3+ million gallons of radioactive tritiated water into the Hudson River. When 450,000 people signed a change.org petition demanding Holtec NOT dump the wastewater into the Hudson— in addition to resolutions from three counties, 30 Rivertown municipalities, and 138 environmental organizations against dumping, available here — Governor Hochul signed the “Save the Hudson ..read more

Peekskill still deserves better
Peekskill Herald

To the editor: Exactly one week after Peekskill’s State of the City Address, where our city was touted as being on “strong” footing, The Peekskill Herald, Lohud, and The Examiner all broke the news of a sitting council member being charged with filing petitions containing forged signatures in order to run for a seat on the Westchester County Board of Legislators last year. If this wasn’t concerning enough, there’s been a new slew of car accidents and injuries, including a flipped car and hurt child, our taxes are going up, a million dollar default judgment against the city, and Peekskill Heral ..read more

Trees, Flowers and Attachment to Place
Peekskill Herald
by Lyn Slater

This past week I’m struck by how many Peekskill residents are posting pictures of the many flowers and flowering trees that are blooming in our city on Instagram. There is a buzz about the revitalization of Pugsley Park. Place and Nature: Outside On my way to NYC the other day, while crossing the bridge high over the train tracks, I turned to the north. Despite the gloomy grey mist that hung over the river and the heavy clouds about to burst open with falling rain, there was a line of trees exploding with white and pink blooms that marched along the edge of the parking lot and made me stop and ..read more
