Prismatic Powders, do they suck?

The long story short is, I send a lot of things out for powder coating and I get a lot of awful results. Colours not matching the samples from pristmatic, colours changing from one part to the next in the same batch, colours / coverage being patchy, colours changing around the edges of parts, etc. One of my coaters is saying "the powder is the problem"; but I've seen prismatic used on some very high end products; so, can you guys clue me into the general consensus about Prismatic? submitted by /u/Rubber_Rotunda [visit reddit] [comments ..read more

Get these re-done?

Hi again all, I just posted yesterday about a job where I was wondering if the under tire area of my wheels should be coated. I got my wheels back from the shop today and am a little concerned. There seems to be what looks like bubbles, handprints/finger prints, gritty “dirt” or something on the inner barrel and a couple of metal pieces where the valve stem pokes through that seem to be broken off. Appreciate any opinions ?? submitted by /u/SpicyMace28 [visit reddit] [comments ..read more

Powder coating mild steel sheets

I'm about to get some mild steel sheets professionally powder coated, and it's my first time with the process. I'm going back and forth on the details, but hoping for some early guidance here: The sheets will only be used indoors. Is powdercoating enough protection against rust? One of the companies I'm speaking with suggested I should galvinize first or the sheets would rust through, or I should only use stainless. If I can use galvinised/ZinTec steel instead, is this a better option or does it add any complication to the powdercoating? What would you expect to have to do in terms of prep f ..read more

Sandblasting options? Better set up?

Sandblasting in humidity I live in a very humid area. I’ve been powder coating for about a year now. I have no problem with humidity in my cabinet. I usually use two water separators and a desiccant filter. I’m starting to get larger projects that do not fit in my cabinet and I bought a harbor freight 110lb portable blaster which worked well for about a day. I’m using the same setup but for some reason there is water collecting in the chamber and clumping up the media. It even comes with an extra water separator on the blaster. My question is - is there a better portable sand blaster that I c ..read more

Hi all, new to this sub. I had a set of wheels professionally powder coated recently and the outside of the wheels were sandblasted but not coated with the same bronze. Is this normal practice? I know this is covered by the tire anyway, but was just curious. submitted by /u/SpicyMace28 [visit reddit] [comments ..read more

Gold metallic

Looking for advice: Hello everybody! I started my own company doing powder coating a couple years ago. I haven’t had much experience shooting a variety of colors. However powder coating isn’t new to me. I’m going to be sandblasting and powder coating my buddies 08 R1 a gold metallic. I’m aware the powder needs primer and a clear coat. Does anybody know if I need to shoot a chroma chrome base underneath before shooting the gold? I’ve heard gold metallic is the hardest to shoot. Going to start testing the powder on some smaller parts before really diving deep. Any tips, do’s and do not’s are ap ..read more

Orange peels

I’m new to powdercoating and have a question. I recently got my wheels powdercoated satin black by a shop that had 5 stars review. From the picture they sent me, you can see signs of orange peels. When I brought this up, the owner said “orange peel is very difficult to minimize on used rims, especially when it has that OEM base (not sure what he meant here) they use over time it degrades the metal. On new rims, orange peel is very minimal”. My wheels are alloy and they are from 2011. Is what he said true? I read online there are other possible causes of orange peels such are too thick of ..read more

New to the industry my job has a small cheap powder coating setup harbor fright gun, home oven, sand blast cabinet, gigantic air compressor and I've been practicing on tools pliers, Chrome plated wrenches, scrap metal Etc. Eventually I'm going to start working on motorcycle parts with exotic Blues. In my city is currently no Powder Coating places. So as an amateur if I want powder coating to replace my job, and I'm really Electro mechanic savvy, how do you guys feel about converting a 12x6 enclosed trailer into an oven. My question is what could go wrong or would it violate any type of regula ..read more
