It is an overlooked fact of church history, but one that speaks volumes about the importance and quality of the King James Bible. The churchmen who initially rejected the King James Version as their preferred translation eventually adopted it as their holy book. This is a brief recap of that story. The Rise of Puritanism The Protestant Reformation began in England during the reign of King Henry VIII, and solidified in the latter half of the 16th century during the rule of his daughter, Queen Elizabeth as Protestant leaders continued to push for the purging of any church practice associated ..read more

The “KJV Only” Debate
KJV Bibles Blog
by Julie Reynolds

For nearly 400 years, the King James Version held the top position amongst Bible translations. Over the past fifty years, however, modern Bible translations like the New International Version (NIV), New Living Translation (NLT), and the English Standard Version (ESV) have grown in popularity. The translation that used to dominate the English-speaking world slipped to second place, with the NIV enjoying over two times the sales of the KJV today. For many who grew up with the KJV, this is an unfortunate loss. For them, the “Authorized Version” (as the KJV is affectionately called) is the only ..read more

William Carey

“Expect great things from God, attempt great things for God.” So the story goes that a young British cobbler named William Carey (1761-1834), intent on seeing his church become more involved in missions work to unreached people, stood up in a church service and implored the leaders to take spreading the gospel more seriously. “Sit down young man,” piped up an elder in the church. “If God wants to convert the heathens, he can do it without your help.” But the “father of the modern missions” was undeterred. In 1792, Carey wrote the influential treatise, “Enquiry into the Obligation of Christia ..read more

By the time he was 19 years old, Charles Spurgeon was a published author and pastoring a church of hundreds of people. His sermons sold thousands of copies each week. Over the course of the next 38 years, this man preached up to a dozen times each week to tens of thousands of people. He founded a seminary, published a monthly magazine, began two orphanages, and wrote over 150 books, though he never earned a university degree. Charles Haddon Spurgeon was born in Kelvedon, Essex (southeast England) in 1834, the oldest of 17 children. Spurgeon’s father and grandfather were both ministers in ..read more

John Wycliffe: Morning Star of the Reformation

Did you know that most of the complaints against the Medieval Roman Catholic Church during the early days of the Protestant Reformation came from within the church itself? Martin Luther, for example, was a Catholic monk and priest. Erasmus of Rotterdam was a Catholic scholar and university professor. Both are considered fathers of the Protestant Reformation, albeit for different reasons. A century and a half, however,  before Luther nailed his 95 Theses on the Wittenberg Church door, sparking the Protestant Reformation, a Catholic theologian and professor in Oxford voiced his dissent ag ..read more

Father’s Day Insights from the KJV

For those readers who grew up with the King James Version (KJV) of the Bible, or who use it regularly today, you will be familiar with a well-known command to fathers from the Apostle Paul: “And, ye fathers, provoke not your children to wrath: but bring them up in the nurture and admonition of the Lord” (Ephesians 6:4). The Bible often directly addresses fathers as the spiritual heads of their households. As we celebrate Father’s Day this month, let’s see what Scripture says to fathers. Lead Your Children Spiritually In the verse quoted above by Paul, he addresses fathers about bringing u ..read more

William Tyndale Biography

William Tyndale (1494-1536): Father of the English Bible When Tyndale was born, there was no Bible in the common language of the person in the pew. The Latin Vulgate was the only translation sanctioned by the Roman Catholic Church. Latin, however, was only used by the educated, which predominantly meant those leading the church. Earlier English translations of the Bible had been translated in portions. The 8th-century Lindisfarne Gospels in Anglo-Saxon English and the 12th-century Wessex Gospels in Old English are two examples. But these manuscripts were kept in libraries accessible only to ..read more

New Testament Manuscripts And The KJV
KJV Bibles Blog

Copying New Testament Manuscripts The 27 books of the New Testament were written between AD 50 and 95. These Scriptures, clearly a new gospel story about Jesus, were translated by Christian scribes or monks who worked in monasteries, although some important work was also done by individuals working alone. In our article on Old Testament translation, we described the painstaking protocol followed by Jewish scribes translating the Hebrew scriptures and we have no reason to believe that the New Testament transcription was any less stringent.  What happens, however, if a copying error mak ..read more
