Former Diamondback Bryan Augenstein plays with his son in one of the pictures that comes up when searching “Arizona Complex League.” No pictures of game action from the actual league come up. | KAILA JONES/TCPALM / USA TODAY NETWORK
If you play baseball in the desert and no one can watch it, does the bat still make a sound?
The difference between the full-season leagues and the complex leagues cannot be overstated, but it can be illustrated. It is professional baseball. The players are among the most talented and skilled 17-22 year olds playing the game. The rules are the same as at all the ot ..read more

As we approach the one-quarter point, could the team have done better?
This was a topic which cropped up in the comments over the weekend, and was also something I promised to check in on, when we signed Joc Pederson in January. This winter, the D-backs were the biggest players they have been in the free agent market for a long time. They signed three of MLB Trade Rumors top fourteen free agents: Jordan Montgomery (#6), Eduardo Rodriguez (#11), and Lourdes Gurriel Jr (#14), in addition to Pederson and dealing for Eugenio Suarez. All told, that’s almost ..read more

The team's tendency to finish series strong continued.

[AZ Central] Diamondbacks blow out Padres to avoid series sweep - Finally, the Diamondbacks could feel some joy. Ketel Marte watched his home run fly, then skipped out of the batters’ box with a levity that has been rare in recent days and weeks. In the bullpen and in the dugout, players smiled and raised their arms skyward. This was the type of moment the Diamondbacks have spent nearly two weeks searching for... Every hit began to feel like a battle. They could never quite get untracked early an ..read more

Another wobbly week, as Arizona sinks further below .500.
Are the D-backs in trouble?
Sam: You could say their backs are against the wall a bit. They have ample opportunity to get back into a groove and the wildcard picture, but each series loss gives them a bit more ground to make up.
Spencer: Yes. They look lost and frankly more like 2021 than I care to admit to myself.
Wesley: Despite of my laissez-faire attitude, I’m starting to get concerned. It’s not the W/L that concerns me, its the mounting injuries to key players, and the ..read more

Much has been made this season about the struggles of Corbin Carroll. We have heard many explanations for why Carroll could be struggling, but Carroll gave us a peek under the hood last night in his post game interview courtesy of the Vice Mayor of PHNX Jesse Friedman:
Corbin Carroll got pretty specific here on what’s gone wrong at the plate:
“I made my swing too flat, and so it's been a lot of work to try and create better attack angles and a better vertical bat angle." pic.twitter.com/amwyI1K5xB

I left the GDT down, I think 5-0, when I realized the Boston Bruins and Toronto Maple Leafs were going to the 3rd period of a 0-0 tie in game 7. Boston won in overtime 2-1, on a Pasternak goal that he scored after corralling a crazy bounce off the boards. Sometimes tightly fought game ..read more

Arizona’s offense was kept in check by San Diego and Arizona’s pitching faltered late.
Diamondbacks News
San Diego 7, Arizona 1
Slade Cecconi was stellar, keeping the Padres hitless until the fifth inning when, with one out, the floodgates opened. Cecconi allowed a walk, followed by back-to-back homers. It didn’t matter much though, as the Arizona offense was stifled yet again.

This friggin’ guy.
I can’t even.
It’s been a deeply stupid week, and when I swapped recaps with Spencer for this week (he really wanted to do Star Wars day....may the Fourth be with you), and saw that I had drawn another Cecconi start, I felt pretty good about that. Slade’s been a big damn hero for us in his first two starts. That said, I felt a bit uneasy, not only because he was going up against Dylan Cease, but also because, as lights out as he has been, I figured Cecconi was bound to fall back to earth at some point. He’s a great kid and he’s really showed up for us, but he probably profi ..read more
